Day 15ishWell progress has been brilliant until today As i type the car is painted and together bar; some of the dash, rear bumper Seats (which i have and seat frames have been fabbed) Headlamps numberplates front calipers engine and some of the loom Basically there is a good 3 or 4 days work and its turn key finnished! The problem is that the last 2 days i have spent colour sanding and polishing the paint (sorry no pics as i want it to be a suprise : and here in lies my problem. The paint is shiny but it is thin so not as bright as id like it to be and has gone through in a couple of places. I'm just not happy with it so my options are, with 7 days to go (my work start date has been put back to the 31st of july); 1. Pull it apart (glass, locks, rubbers, rear lights - thats about it) and go for a curse word or bust last spray. This may risk the car not making it to CaRS but it would make sure it was 100% right which would make me a lot happier especially if I'm showing it. 2. Live with it, finnish it and get to CaRS and stop being such a fugging Tart. Pull it apart after CaRS and re-do it then. 3. Sack the whole thing, stop being such a c0ck and trying to build a car in 3 weeks, build it over the summer, 4AGE it first time and do it right. Just go in the Pug you Numpty. 4. Give up on retro cars as, like Lewis my innner child has packed his bags. Get myself a nice 55 plate diesel fiesta on finance which will cost me £34000 over 56 years, weld the doors up on the KP, kick out the glass and banger race it before someone else does (number 4 is not a real option I'm just feeling mardy) Answers on a postcard please!

Isnt it funny, ive had a curse word day too, giving yourself 3 or 4 weeks to totally build a cars is a very very silly idea, and thats why were doing it. I say get it all together and drive it to cars, this thread is called cars or bust mate, go for borked!
Once cars is all over and done with, pull it to bits and give it some time, its what I'm going to be doing, it aint gonna be finished but itll be running.

Ooof, it's alright, I've restored (fed?) my inner child by (possibly) doing something ridiculous and getting some help with me car (and spending time with a nice lass ;D), I've got the rear axle all together now, just a few other fettles and it's MOT time (Again!) Sorry to hear you've had a bad hit after coming on so strong, but it does happen. The progress you've made so far is astounding anyway! I think the question to ask yourself is much would you be able to live with the dodgy paintwork? I don't think the 4AGE option really comes in here, as that doesn't entail painting the whole car....it'd look great wether it had a 4AGE or smaller under the bonnet. Can you add a little extra 'finish' coat to the areas you're not happy with? Or, can you mask off all trim, prep it gently and respray with everything in place?

WIP - Work in Progress - nothing wronmg with that - if you think all the cars on the stand will be perfect then you're aiming way too high
Lower your sights - raise your aim - oops sorry lapsed into ABC for a sec there!!!!!!
Anyway get it there however it turns out

Live with it for now and then after CARS take the time to do it better if you want to. If you don't get it to CARS wouldent you feel worse that you have 'failed' than a little dissipointed that its not at its best? Thats what I'm feeling about mine, better to get it there in a pretty good state than spend ages trying to get it perfect and miss my deadline!
I havent even tryed colour sanded mine yet, it still has runs in it! The paint looks awful up close but thats not whats important to me relly. I think everyone from here understands that the quality of the paint work attualy has very little influance on the car.

Good show! KP's ftw. KP30's are especially tasty wee motors! She's gonna look superb once finished as well! Are the 5K's quite easy to get hold of in UK? They're a bit too sought after here so they fetch stupid prices... would love one myself for my early KP61. Also does the T40 you have come with an A-series bellhousing on it? Never actually encountered a T40 mated to a 4AGE, make a nice circuit setup with an appropriate ratio diff in it, I'm just in the process of slapping together a U-code 3.909:1 diff with the thicker axles etc. for my car. Keep the updates flowing, lovin it

I love each and every one of my cars...and if they were all legally on the road I wouldn't hesitate about taking any one of them to CARS, wether it was perfect or tatty. Come on guys, lets not panic about getting our rides ready for CARS, lets chill out and look forward to just getting them there, however unfinished or tatty they look. Our rides are for enjoying, not for fretting and getting worked into a state over.

For the sake of a couple of days work - doing the few bits you have left to get it on the road & to CARS..... do iiiiiiiiit! We don't care if the paint aint perfect - its not what Retro-Rides is about, we all just want to see your new pride & joy whatever. After the all-important show, then you can re-visit the bodywork & continue the project, fitting the 4AGE etc at a more leisurely pace. At least the jobs which are left go towards the final project as a whole & make it easier later. Basically - option 2

Day 16/17had a mission the last 2 days, i was so gutted that the paint was wibblepoo i started stripping and prepping it at 6am yesterday and managed to get another coat down. it went off pretty quick so i started putting it back together and now it just needs the engine in (tomorrows job) and the brakes putting back together - hoping to be driving it about tues/wed so i can make sure nothing falls off!! I'm leaving the paint as is as well, not flatted or polished. Its shiney so it will do. I'm just so excited to get it there after not making it with the red shuv last year! oh yeah and its still got 993cc powwwa, the 2nd guy i found with a 1500 is messing me about will get some teaser pics up soon - [glow=red,2,300]I'm so excited[/glow] (and tired :

option 2.
at the end of the day, paint finish is only one thing. its the 'actual' car thats important. I was forever polishing my red skoda and yet it was really rusting and that ended up being scrapped. as long as it is structually solid i don't care so much about the paint. also, the fact that you painted it yourself and have done all this work in such little times means that the car just getting there is good enough for me.
I cant wait to see it!

The fact it's a KP30 means it's gonna look great regardless of finish anyway

Great to know it's going to be there. KP numbers on the stand gradually growing, what with this and the Starlets of Goldenwonder and me.
