my initial answer was - why would you buy a new mini - period.
a tidy mini with a hayabusa motor in the back now thats something, anybody seen the smartcar on youtube with a busa motor in?
the only prob i can see is the radiator is too big and its fanned wich id be worried about over cooling the engine

thermostats fail - id be keeping an eye on the guage - saying that if it was me id buy a bandit 1200 engine bored to 1340 and plumb in a head cooler to keep the temps down, change the gearing, install a better clutch. id look at changing the drive cog to a belt drive rather than a chain, ive never had the best of luck with watercooled bikes - aircooled or oilcooled is the way to go lol

there seems to be a bit of a 'thing' with these, they get built, then end up on ebay a week or so later, never quite fiugred out why, they look like they should be a lot of fun, but aparently they're not.......

Some sort of sevenesque kit car (no age yet!!)
'01 Mondeo estate 2.0 (engine eventually destined for kit car!) - scrapped, engine only left!
'98 E300 estate, rusty but seemingly reliable, fast-ish tat hauler. eventual engine donor
A35 van, or whats left of it after it lived in a field for many years

I've seen a few of these run at York and they're pretty quick! Z cars is not too far from me and I was working just round the corner from it a year or so back. Meant to pop in for a nosey/chat when passing but never got round to it. ...anybody seen the smartcar on youtube with a busa motor in? There is (or was) one near me. It was built by a guy who does Ferrari/Lambo replicas for a living. A workmate at the time who knows him went to see it. He says it's frightening! It struggles to keep the front wheels down and when people hear it they're looking round for a superbike ;D |

The reality with chain driven bike engined cars is constant chain maintenance snatchy drive and poor gearing for cruising plus lousy economy . A 250hp car will reel a busa powered mini in from 80mph onwards . For me gearing was the main issue , the stock bike clutches worked fine even with nitrous thrown into the mix.
I've gone back to a car engine after running a single and twin bike engined car for the last few years .
Awesome track tool and good fun on the road but not an everyday car

Short wheelbase, mid engined, more power than grip, I reckon they'd bite back hard if you weren't paying 100% attention. They're not cheap either, and there's very little Mini left, apart from the shilouette. A Fiat 500 shell would be cool as well.
Is there a front engined, front wheel drive option available? I think that would be more in keeping with the Mini theme. If they can stick a 1400 VTec lump in there, you'd imagine that a Bike Engine should be possible as well?

Do you think these would fail the BIVA? yeh, just a little bit.... the only way to get away with it would be to either make it front wheel drive and not touch the body at all, or to start with a beetle and try and cram it into the back without modifying the chassis..... basically, you modify the shell, then its biva time..... |

2 mins from me but ive heard good and bad things about the quality of their work. They do look cool as feck though but for me i like a proper engine,not an angry wasp 2ft away from me!

Most of these end up being ringers too...  |

A friend of mine built one of these, then sold it on a few weeks after finishing it. This was a couple of years ago, so IVA was less well known about - his certainly never went for the test. Anyway, he said he sold it because it was a complete PITA. Not badly built, just required constant fettling. It was totally useless as a daily car and a bit too much dosh to justify keeping just for trackdays. He had planned to daily it from the start on a very short commute, but the reality of the snappy clutch and having to give it big revs just to pull away every time soon got on his tits, along with the noise, shocking economy and loads of other factors.
He reckons they are fantastic on the assumption that you can afford to build one purely for trackdays, but best kept off the roads.

I still don't get how VOSA haven't picked up on them, even the ones they do full builds on in house aren't registered properly. Really annoys me how companies like this either blantantly ignore or have no knowledge of the rules.
