Here's the original, most of us on here must know of them. Derided for much of their life and generally bought by old folk despite the 'sporty' image of a coupe. I think most of us can now see they have some potential. So, what about these more modern equivalents for the future? Even on here we probably disregard them, and they all sold to a similar market. Worthy of consideration in a few years' time? Scoupe, what a name Nissan 100NX. I do see a modded one locally. Toyota Paseo. Discuss, and post pic's of any modern-ish small coupe alternatives.

the 100NX has quite distinctive styling, i recon in a few years when there arn't so many around they will start to appeal like the 120y. Same goes for these:

I'm not sure if there is much nowdays that could be compared to the 120Y. It seems to me that the more "modern" coupe was designed to be such from the outset where as the 120Y looked liked an afterthought mooted after a hard nights drinking of saki in a Tokyo nightclub. My dad had a 120Y coupe which i was given the use of many moons ago when my own car ( MK 1 Cavalier) decided to seize its engine. I found it a lovely drive, comfortable, everything to hand, light steering/ gearchange and generally a whole lot more pleasant an enviroment to be in than your average Dagenham dustbin. That was the first J car that i ever drove, apart from riding regular shotgun in my mates Datsun 100A, and i then understood just why Japan was able to wipe the floor with other motor manufacturers. Future coupes would have to be as quirky and a bit odd to be compared to Datsuns finest and i really cant think of any to hand. Most were and are souless without any endearing qualities that make you go "ahhh" . The modern car really is a souless and heartless thing.

Big problem is they are all "wrong wheel drive" designed for packaging reasons rather than driving experience

I would have said the standard B12 Sunny SLX with the E series engine was the spiritual succesor to the 120Y coupe. It's from the same lineage (B10, B110, B210, B310, B11, B12 etc) and it's got no performance attributes much like a 120Y. I suppose the Zx version is almost the equivelent of the Sunny Excellent PB210. I do think the B12 coupes will have some degree of interest in the future as they are very unconventionally styled, even for their time. They also have another factor that can make a car popular with enthusiasts like us...it's very easy to tune and upgrade.
Remember as well, that most cars of the 120Y era most certainly weren't RWD for the driving experience. They were just cheap to make, simple to build and able to withstand unmade roads in the more remote regions of the planet. FWD cars then were generally not as robust.

I've fallen in love with the 120Y coupe..they just look so "wrongly right" somehow!

One of those Scoupes up the road from me, keep looking at it and thinking it has some potential with a set of JDM Wheels and an Oil Cooler whacked on the front.

It's not a coupe, but how about a Suzuki Ignis Sport? It's a Suzuki, which is enough to put most people off. It looks like a van, and most of them appear to be bright yellow (can also be had in rally livery, if you want to look really silly). 1.5 with less than 100bhp. I've never yet seen one driven by anyone who looks remotely cool. Thing is, they're an absolute giggle, and have got a good track record in junior rallying. And in rally spec:
