One of the clusters earthing out against the body? I.e a gasket behind the light missing? My dads bug did it for a while. N/S rear indicator kept shorting. Resulting in blown bulbs, And eventually blown relay....

Odd that they didn't work when tested but work fine on the road.

Electric things have a life of their own and do as they wish. Thats why I don't trust them and prefer as few of them in my car as possible ;D

by brain is wired for Electrics...
Bad earths and shorts do not blow bulbs. Blackend bulbs are either OLD, faulty manufacture , or getting too much voltage. only real way they can be getting too many volts is if the alternator is overcharging.
White / smoked / cracked bulbs are usually from water in the light fitting sloshing onto the hot glass and it cracking and air getting in.

Bad earth is the source of evil in 12V systems. My guess is that when you test with the motor not running you got 11-12V and the bad earth is blocking, when the motor is running you get nearly 14V and that might be enough to light up the bulbs.

Bad earths and shorts do not blow bulbs. . they will. A crappy short against the body will flicker the bulb. It might not go pop there and then but a few days of it will fry it. Like flicking alight on and off repeatedly at home. As for the voltage side of it. Have you checked what your getting at the batt while running? Might be over charging. Dads DS did it and it kept blowing sidelight bulbs... Changed the regulator and it was fine.

For anyone else who was wondering, it's a 1966 Cadillac Coupe de Ville.

if turning a bulb repeatedly off and on made it blow, then indicators would be a bit of a failure, as would fruit machines, pinball, xmas lights, discos, pelican crossings.. As you can see, urban myth zone here.

As you can see, urban myth zone here. Not turning them on and off... Its like holding a switch on to the point its buzzing it. I know it will blow it as I had some issues with a short in the dash lighting on my old bug. that went thru bulbs until I found a slit in the wire. Its not something ive just heard of its somthing ive expierienced. Pinball machines , x mass lights, indicators..... are all softly relayed and arnt flickering , They are flashing. By the way, I'm not trying to argue about it or say anyones right or wrong. I'm just saying thats the expierience i had of the same sort of thing. It worked out to the dash lights blowing every week or so / flickering up until that point while driving.

I like this theory. However now it appears the lights work OK with the motor not running anyway. They work. I give up.
