Model: Trabant P601 Year: 1989 Mileage: 40000km Tax: none MOT: none Location: Fife Scotland Additional Information: Unfinished project as I've just bought another X1/9. 89 trabant saloon in a couple of shades of blue.. has been off road for years and was bought with the engine in bits in the boot. Engine is now all back together and running well. Brakes have all been done including all new hoses, front shoes and pipes where needed.Parts are dirt cheap from Germany ( £8 for a full engine gasket set-delivered!) All electrics have been sorted and all working. Needs a few bits and bobs and a respray to finish,as the panels are made of Duroplast, there is no body rust, but needs a bit of welding in the battery tray.Needs a couple of tyres-I have 3 decent ones, but still has the original DDR snow tyres on at the moment. UK registered, have green bit of V5. I painted one side with an aerosol of Ford Olympic blue just to see what it looked like- near to an original Trabant colour. I reckon 4 aerosols would do the whole car!! Would be amazing with a big bike engine in it, or slammed like some of the ones in Germany.

Yeah, know what you mean- I was enjoying bringing this wee car back to life- then the X1/9 popped up.. which needs the garage and some work. Never enough time or cash to go around.

I should NOT be tempted to buy this! I've already got two cars to run How much do you think it would cost to get it road legal?

Any more pictures of the bits that need doing to it?
Sorely tempted. I love old 2-strokers and this strikes me as a bargain. Fife is a bit of a trek though.
I take it it'd have to be trailered?

Thanks for the bumps folks! Obviously the car needs work- it was off the road for many years when I bought it. To get it finished and on the road I reckon it'd need: The welding done as said above A battery 2 supplied tyres fitted and 1 new one. An ignition switch. The original had been butchered, and I really don't like where it is positioned. I took it off completely and was going to fit the older type on the dash. Supplied steering rack boot fitted Supplied handbrake cable adjuster fitted. Wiper blades Carb /timing set up etc. Starts and runs fine, but never driven it more than 100 yards There is some play in one of the front lower suspension "kingpins"- it requires a new 'o' ring, and greased up. If this doesn't take the play out it will need a shim- total cost about 50p. Rear belts of some sort as its an '89 the other stuff it would need is: The edges of the boot, where the metal boot floor joins the outer duroplast panels- a little corrosion here- could be seam sealed, not an MOT point. couple of door locks- £5 each an aerial boot lock- someone screwdrivered all the locks. Drivers door has a brand new handle with 2 keys it has 2 odd wheels- all same size, but different styles paintwork !!! Cost to get it ready for the road is pretty minimal, if you can do the welding- parts really are very cheap- Trabi UK or plenty suppliers in Germany. more than that- they sky's the limit! Golf GTi front disc coversions, 4x100 wheel conversions, Wartburg engine adaptor plates... all avaliable off the shelf!! Waiting on a lcocal guy coming this afternoon-and another 2 waiting to hear if it goes or not.. Lots of these things seem to be coming out of the woodwork lately!!
