how do you fit a modern cd car stereo in a ford capri mk3?? I went to halfords today to choose my stereo but the original stereo in the car is quite a bit smaller and so is the space it fits in. The fitter guy wasnt sure what to do and he's meant to be the expert. All i know is surely there must be a way. Its a mk3 capri 1986 if thats any help. Sorry if this is a little trivial Any advice would be of great help My further research has now shown that i will now either have to cut the dash for it to fir, or get a different fascia. I thought it was going to be straight forward lol

depends what ya budget is. Money no object, then an electric grinder is the way forward, but if you ain't flush, then its gonna have to be a hammer and chisel job. hth

Well, hammer and chisel it may have to be as I'm not very rich. I'm sure it could be done easily enough. Are all older cars the same as this?

You should be able to fit it without too much difficulty I have seen plenty of capri`s with a modern stereo in the dash. Cars older than 1980 had a lot of different sizes of stereos fitted, so most take a little bit of work. A lot of 70`s cars never even had slots for radios. I think even the mk1 fiesta didnt have a slot for a radio on the povo specc`ed models, so either had them bolted to the underside of the dash or had a quickfit 70 (remember them) centre console ;D

I did a Mk2, and a Mk3 with a modern radio cassette. Both went in easy enough. All I had to do was open up the dash panel to DIN E size and it all went in just fine. These days I'd check eBay or where ever to see if I could find a dash which had already been cut and fit that and keep the original uncut dash in the attic in case one day someone wants to restore it to complete original. Uncut dashes are starting to be sought after.

my capri had a standard sized radio in it.
if your ss dash is a bit pricey, go to the scrappy and retro fit a later crappi dash?

Leave the old one where it is and fit your new one in the glovebox or somewhere out of sight.

Expert - no chance if you went to Halfrauds He's never even seen a Capri before. Yep the material never matched anything and they always felt like they were about to fall under your feet every time you changed gear - thta's if there was enough room for your foot on the clutch.

would a capri/cortina ghia not have a console that you could put your new stereo in? don't trust halfords fitters, ive had to re do a few that wires have fallen out of, they use crappy crimp connectors and those horrid scotch lock things (altho i have used them before in emergencies, break downs!) i always solder connections when i can! keep your eyes on ebay too, for dash facia

I was told all capri fascias were the same. Ive possibly got a swap on the cards, someone is after an orginal fascia and will swap me for their cut fascia, which makes us both happy!

Thats alright then. I'd ask for a bit of cash your way, uncut dash has got to be worth more than a cut one

I'd ask for a bit of cash your way, uncut dash has got to be worth more than a cut one Id just be happy to swap to be honest, would save me cutting it myself. i might have something for you, its in the loft, ill dig it out when i get the chance ps, i worked at halfords ill dig out some of my install stuff ive done over the years, id like to think i know what i was talking about anyways, i hope so, i have the whole escort loom parked next to me ;D Nice one, if its a fascia you have that would be awesome, id reward you generously, the guy i was swapping with hasnt got back to me as of yet and the stainless steel thing i saw on ebay turns out its just a cover, not a replacement fascia.
