Nah then!
Up for auction is my classic Mercedes 280 CE coupe in need of some TLC..
I have owned this lovely old cruiser for about a year now and used it as a daily car - it has never let me down apart from needing a new water pump and has been a pleasure to drive.
Unfortunatley the time has come to part ways - the MOT has just run out and I don't have the time or money to restore it to former glories. I have also just bought another classic Merc and need the funds to put into that.
The MOT ran out a couple of weeks ago however it still runs sweet. Fires up straight off every time - even in the arctic conditions during the winter! The engine is strong and pulls like a train, autobox is fine and gearchanges are smooth and responsive. Temp and oil pressure are good, brakes are fine, power steering can be a bit intermittent at times and can be rather heavy when parking but is fine whilst driving. Tax runs until end of April so could be driven away..
I have pictured the main scabby bits on the bodywork - has a few rust spots and bubbling around the arches, bonnet has rust and a large mark along drivers side edge - I would suggest it would be better to find a replacement bonnet rather then patch this one becuase of the rot along the N/S edge, lacquer seems to have lifted on the bootlid and roof and is dull compared to the rest of the paintwork. In truth I would say the old girl would need a respray to get it looking really smart again.
Interior is very clean and pretty tidy for the age. Carpets are nice and clean with no wear, wood trim and dash are in good nick, front seats are good - a little faded and worn in places but not scruffy. Back seat is ok but has suffered from sun damage along the backrest top and headrests - and has faded and worn quite badly. All the windows and switches work apart from the front passenger window - can hear the mechanism working but does not move. Sunroof works ok but leaks occasionally above the drivers seat in heavy rain - probably needs a new seal. I have fitted a quality sony cd player and 4 great sony speakers, these are not included in the sale - but I would be willing to leave them in the car upon negotiation with the buyer when sold.
I'm afraid the tasty BBS wheels are also not included in the sale - they will be going on my new ride. So the car will come with standard wheels + good legal tyres.
The great JUGS number plate however will be left on the car, an added bonus for someone who is particularly passionate about erm, JUGS!
I don't know what work would be needed to get the old tank through its MOT - I haven't looked into it really because I don't have the time or money at the moment and have another old Merc to play with.
Feel free to come and have a poke around for potential problems for the MOT - one of the jacking points is a bit fudged (pictured) so that would probably need attention, along with the power steering and a headlight is out.
I have been honest in my description of the old girl and have mentioned any faults I know of - but there may be things I have missed. With a bit of work it would be well worth saving this classic coupe - they are beautiful cars. Would be a shame to see it broken for parts and I would love to see it go to an enthusiast who is going to restore it.
Cheers, Rob.
