Been reading up on it, but don't wanna fry my electrics.
is it really as simple as it seems? turn battery arround then reverse the polarity on the generator with a jumper cable
I know things like heater fans and wiper motor may run backwards, I Guess you just swap the wires over to combat this.
seems rediculously simple? but with the luck I've been having recently I don't want to feck it up. How much scope is there for things to go wrong? would I have to be a complete moron to mess this up?
It's so I can run an accuspark system, as Pointed out by one of the other posts on the forum.
the car is a 63 Hillman Superminx

Dead easy. I did the conversion a couple of weeks back to fit my AccuSpark kit (and to have more conventional electrics!). I also asked whether it was as easy as it seemed as I couldn't believe it either! ;D One thing you've missed on the list is to swap the wires on the coil - it'd still work but you'd get a very weak spark. Connect battery the other way around Connect coil wires the other way around Take off the small "F" connector on the dynamo Run a wire from the battery + and flash across the "F" terminal a few times to re-polarise the dynamo. Turn the ignition on and start car. If the ignition light operates as normal (i.e.: on with the ignition, off when started) you've done it. Useful link on how to do it here. It refers to MG's but it's all the same sorta thing. I had to mess about with longer earth cables and different sized terminal posts on the battery. You may be alright (depends on your battery and cables) but it's something to consider.

Cheers Benzboy, thats great. I'll probably , renew the cables anyway as the ones there look a bit passed their best. having more conventional electrics seems to be a good idea if it's that simple.

Don't forget to disconnect the clock, revcounter (if electric rather than cable) and the radio (if fitted) even if they don't work - none of these will work with the polarity swaped and all may go "bang" quite spectacularly. Apart from that, as above, carry on

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Good point SOC. I had no such concerns as I don't have any of those and the rev counter is mechanical.
I read things about the heater fan and wipers working the "wrong" way afterwards, but I also read that it wasn't true. Electrics are definitely not my strong point, but to me, if the motors all worked the wrong way afterwards surely the starter motor would be spinning the engine the wrong way too?! My blower seems to work just fine, and the wipers are their usual lazy, swaying selves. ;D
