;D Tom is a mate of mine, I've know him for ages, we'd do pretty much anything for each other, so when he called me on Tuesday night to ask if I'd go to a village near great yarmouth with him to look at a car, I just said, "sure". So he collected me @ 6pm, we took his BMW E30 318i Lux cab. this is what greeted me when I arrived. Its a 1983/4 Pontiac Parisienne. lovely interior is a sea of American 80s brown plastic the car is like a yatch and in there, lurks a 5.0 V8, fantastic.

funny you should ask.....
the bloke said, it's only ever been welded once, when I took the bottom of the cats out and hollowed them, then welded them back up.
Oh it'll be fun.....

What'll the engine be like when you rip all the anti-smog sh ite off it? I reckon it'll probably crack 150 bhp easy! Looks well cool mind you. i wouldn't like it if I hadn't seen Chevy chase driving to Wallyworld though.

its basicly the pontiac version of the chevrolet caprice 5.0, obv a wagon version though, with more toys.
the 305cid revs better than the 350cid, and they are reputed as approx 180-190bhp without cats.
but there is a lot of metal for it to push.
It'll be slow, thirsty, but barge-tastic, so who cares!!!
4 speed (OD) auto slusher too

Theres 3 different 5.0 litre engines used in that series of B body GM platform.
Pontiac 301, Chevrolet 305, Oldsmobile 307 (not to be confused with the earlier Chevy 307)
These engines are all generally a bit of toss. The 301 Poncho isn't bad, its just small. I think it was discontinued before '84 though. The 307 was used in a lot of B platform cars, sound fairly high tech (for its day) with alloy intakes and all that, but the ports are pencil narrow and they don't like to rev. They also feature windowed mains which means you have to restrict them to 5500 RPM tops, maybe 5000 to be real safe. These continued up to about '85 in Pontiacs and Buicks.
The 305 Chevy was used in lots of cars including Pontiac B bodies and pretty much all GM fare after '85 when they standradised on Chevy only engines. I doubt it revs better than a 350. A 350 is about square and tweaked ones will rev to 8 grand with some help to the bottom end.
305 has excellent torque curvve but they don't rev, and even if they do they can't breath at anything much over 3500 RPM. The timing colapses at about 5000 RPM on the stock HEI
The "good" high revving SBCV is the 302. This was a special homologation enginne to get Chevy's Z28 into a 5.0 ltre race class back in '69. Very rare and safe to 7 grand on the tach from the factory.
The 305 is a narrow bore unit with small valves and bad shrouding at that. the heads are usually (if not always) open chamber style, there may have been some with the lean burn style head later on but these also suck a fat one for performance. Due to the bore its not really possible to reliably run good heads as these are designed for a 350 style deck & bore.
Stock compression is about 8:1 and pretty much nobody makes higher compression pistons off the shelf, what with the crappy heads you're stuck with having to get custom forged domes $$$$ to get decent CR and even then you'll have cack quench and risk of detonation.
Theres a whole load more emissions gear on there than just the cats, feedback carb, EGR, PCV, A.I.R. etc. Leave the PCV in place but junk the rest. Also you'll probably need to recurve the distributor (Crane do a good kit, amongst others)
The rod ratio on these also sucks. You can't do much with production rods because you get side loading problems. Also they are all 2 bolt mains unlike the 350 where you can get a 4 bolt main. As I recall the 305 also has smaller weaker main bearings than a 350.
A chevy tuning guy I spoke to recently commented "there may be 20% capacity differnece between a 305 and 350 but the power difference when you do the same mods is more like 40-50%"
If you want grunt in the wagon get a 350, build that and then drop it in when its done. No point in trying to do anything much to the 305.
The factory rating for the 305 is 120 BHP in most applications...
Don't get me wrong, that is a mega cool cruiser, I love it and it has fantastic potential. I am a great proponent of thhe American V8 as a torque monster street killer, but they aren't all good ones. The 305 will be a reliabile smoker, and it can make all the right nosies, but it will never be a performance engine, so don't waste any cash trying to make it into one.
One thing you can waste some cash on to good effect is handling upgrades. The yanks use these (usually the 2 door version) in autotests and the like, yeah, I've seen photos! One of the magazines runs a handling shootout annually and one of the guys blew the car he was entered with a week before the event so he turned up in a daily driver '80 or '81 Caprice which had a few bolt on upgrades to the chassis and a warm 350 and he came like 3rd overall!

;D Alistar you know your yanks, thats for sure , I was just going on what I've read. Tom isn't really "boved" when it comes to power, he's all about the cruise factor . Ta for the information. A reliable cruiser is what he was after anyway, and "that noise" ;D The boy done good.

Its a good choice because parts are still easy to come by.
A lot of people go all mad and rip all the "stuff" off the engine and drop on a 4 bareel and pancake filter, and straight through exahsuts / side exits and they run worse, but louder, so they don't really realise the ballsed it up.
Work with whats there not against it. I ran a big 80s yank with a 318 with all the stock emissions gear and single pipe exhaust on it and juut keeping it "right" I got 17.2 @ 72.2 MPH out of it, which for a 2.2 ton car with a factory rated 140 BHP and a 3 speed auto on 205 whitewall tyres with no traction and 2.26 final drive, thats pretty good. Theres much smaller/lighter cars with 140 BHP which struggle to go better than a low 17 on the quarter...
I reckon with a gear about 3.5 that would have been a mid 16 easy, still on the stock emissions rig.
And I got 17 MPG out of it round town, which is pretty good for the size and weight and my driving style.
filmidget - unfortunately in the early 1970s US federal emissions regualtions put demands on manufacturers for engines which the technology couldn't deliver on until the late 1980s. We have the "dark days" of smog strnagled motors in the USA to thank for the fact that when the rest of us went to cat equipped emission controlled engined in the early 90s we could do so with only a minimal drop in power output.

I haven't owned a cat equiped car yet (although I admit the Mrs is now on her first) Dave: How rude of me... nice unusual choice - That to replace the BMW? Good parts hauler ;D
