ok so i have a mk3 escort cab and after looking at a few mx5's and e36 bmw's with hard tops it got me thinking about knocking one up for my car. the question is though how the hell would i go about it? would be hard to make a mould direct from the original roof as its not completely flat sooooo......... any ideas? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png)

you would have to make a mould and then use to mould to make a copy of the roof and then find a way to attatch it and then make it seal, it would need a lot of supports as it would flex and crack
it would be doable, but a lot of work

Just chop the roof off a 3 door Escort, weld a flat flange around the bottom of the C pillars, chop the B pillar off and use lunchbox style latches to fasten it to the car. Won't be easy though.

you could make up a plug from MDF and then make a mould from that, or as above start with a stock escort roof and use that to make your mould from, you'll want to go fiberglass i think as its easier to strengthen it without adding to much weight as its quite a big roof and will get heavy.

I had thoughts on this a few years ago, as the cabby looks so good, but the roof is kinda curse word as all weather.
I was going to start with a dead roof, and stip it of its cloth, then skin an orion roof, keeping the gutters, and weld this to the dead hood frame, this gives you the clamps at the front, you would also have the 2 side mountings, and i would run a lip under the wire retention rail at the rear, so you and a couple frinds lift it in place, slide it forward, clamp it down, and bolt the sides in. I wouldnt be too woried about weight, if your bothered about weight, buy an xr3:)

P.s I'd also use a mini rear window, side windows are just standard ecsort cabby windies

If your soft top is leaking though it probably needs a new one, i have had loads over the years, once a roof is 3 or 4 years old they start to lose their weather proof abilities. I have tried all sorts of things on all sorts of roofs to cure problems, its usually easier to buy a new roof and seals, thats the downside of owning a convertible, the roof is a consumable item. Our frontera has a new one, and my Vitara just got a good second hand one added, both of em were leaking, and now both of em are not. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/popuptoaster/Frontera/CIMG3189.jpg) ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/popuptoaster/Vitara/CIMG3255.jpg)

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

my roof dosent leek (ahem small drips don't count right?) am thinking of going down the glassfibre route as i want it to be as light as possible but i thinking making the rear window out of polycarbonate and exteding it further up the roof line further and making the whole roof alot sleeker than it is now
