Hello ;D Came back from sking in france last night in our VW T4 swb van and it got half a mile out of Dover and died. Loud grinding sound then engine died. Turns over but won't fire and has no water . It was dying of rust before, but now if has consigned itself to the scrapheap! Trouble is I'd like to strip a few bits first, so I think its worth recovering back home. It now sat in a garage near Dover, but it needs to be recovered back to near Stroud, Gloucestershire, 210 miles. Would anybody be interrested in doing this. I've had a quote for £280 by someone that might be able to do it tomorrow, but thought I'd offer if up here if anybody wants a quick bit of cash today or tomorrow. My number is o79o4 55522o Cheers Chris The poor thing ... 173000 miles on many many family holiday. Unforuntaly I have never seen another T4 rust like it, every panel is just dissolving!

Aren't you in AA, RAC, Red Flag etc as they will normally recover to home - for a fee if you don't have full cover but still probably cheaper than an independant. Weigh up what you want to strip off to see if actually worth £280 ? I assume at that mileage (and bodywork) that everything is totally shagged so could you nip down in another vehicle to remove what you want to keep and then get scrap collector in area where at present to collect remains ?

Unfortunatly we're a bit stupid and neither me or my dad have breakdown cover. I have it on my Imp but it only covers that. I'm sure its worth £280, its a decently converted camper inside so it has pop up roof, sliding reclining rear seats, cupboard with sink, electrics etc and the wheels are ok with almost mint tyres. I think the plan is to strip all the camper stuff out and put it in another van. We've been thinking about doing that for a while due to the rust and the fact the 2.5 does sod all mpg!

Try Ray at www.the-bugbarn.co.uk/They're north of Cheltenham on the A46, he has a Transit flatbed, worth asking, he may know of a Donor vehicle if you want to transfer all the camper bits too.

Sign up to the AA or RAC in your name (any vehicle) give it a day or two and call them. I advised somebody with a dead gearbox in France to do this and it worked a treat. Most breakdown cover is restricted in the first 24 hours but after that, you get the full cover you paid for. Got to be a lot less than over 200 quid.

or even sign up with a cheaper company, ive used the £32 a year ones on compare sites before and had no problems with them, infact have always been quicker than the RAC, who don't mind leaving you stranded for 6 hours.

I have had success using Shiply. Can be a lot cheaper than you think. On another note, WTF has happened to that building in the background of your photo?! Has it crashed?

Good point grunty. On the subject of cheaper breakdown companies I know there are loads, but I don't get to pick them cos most of them don't do vans. That having said, what parts of 'covered in any vehicle' excludes you when you are driving a van?
