Is there any way of finding out where a car was registered?
A mate of mine has been looking through some old photos since his dad passed away and came across an old photo of a car his dad used to own, the strange thing is that the registration on his dads old car was 8 numbers different to the car he owns now, his dads been *733 LWJ and his being *741 LWJ, both cars being registered the same year.
Surely there must be some way of finding out which area they were both registered.

www.newreg.co.uk has a lookup to the DVLA. If you go to the section of the website where you can look up if your chosen "private plate" has ever been issued, you type in the reg and it tells you where and when it was issued. www.newreg.co.uk/home/search/index.htmland scroll down to "was it issued" See, b*****d number plate dealers are useful for something after all...

although oddly its not working properly at the moment as several of mine come up as "were never issued" although the Buick comes back as a hit (although with some bobbins info)
JUX 24D - When was it Issued? This registration was issued, but we don't have an accurate issue date. The original office for this letter combination is Shropshire C.C.
If you want New Reg to try to acquire JUX 24D for you Click Here. If you are the owner of the registration mark JUX 24D please Click Here.
The above information is for reference purposes only and does not mean that JUX 24D may be purchased.

Hmmm.... maybe they've purged records of "expired" registrations when they went to the V5C because some amusing ones I looked up a while ago which came back as released back in the '30s now come back as "was never released". HOT69 for example was a released plate when I checked before and now it isn't?

Glass's do a book called something like Index of Registration Marks, I got hold of a couple at an autojumble. They seem to cover an 8-year period, and tell you when and where a number was issued.

As far as I know up until the new 0x and 5x plates were introduced, the last two letters of the three (ie the WJ in your case) are related to the registration office. I know UG is a Leeds combination and there were alot of AF's running around in Cornwall so must be local to there. VC is a Coventry combo and is what many of the works rally/race Triumphs had.
My A35 was VOY, OY being North London. My Oxford is DHX, HX being West London & it was bought from a dealers in Acton.
There must be a list of them on line somewhere?

There must be a list of them on line somewhere? There is, the one Ben posted Certainly covers all the ones I'm used to seeing in Norfolk and Suffolk - DX, BJ, NG, AH etc etc. The Glass's book is handy because it also says when a batch of numbers was held back for re-registrations. These are usually from end of year when the full allocation of 999 numbers wasn't used, and are used for issuing an age-related plate to an imported car or one that's had a number transferred.

Which classic british black and white film is it where the robbers get caught because a sharp eyed little lad spots that their getaway car has commercial vehicle paltes on it?
Bet he grew up into a RR type of person!
