I am no way an expert but I faced a similar dilemma with the Triumph. I ended up going with an amp, and no head unit, and connect my MP3 player up direct. That way, the amp can be hidden out of sight. I'm not suggesting that is the best for everyone though. In terms of the head unit, can you mount out of view? in glove box, under dash shelf etc? that will allow you to buy one that doesn't necessarily have to be retro styled. In terms of speakers - Go with front speakers, components - 6" ideally mounted in the 'kick panels', I.e. the side panel front of the door under the dash. I mounted mine to these pods and they are very discreet there - cgi.ebay.co.uk/Speaker-pods-for-5-25-inch-6-inch-speakers-SA-011_W0QQitemZ390286424665QQcategoryZ14932QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DDLSL%252BSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%252BDDSIC%26otn%3D8%26pmod%3D260451953999%252B260451953999%26po%3D%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D7269677043077178411#ht_500wt_922They can be attached to the panel, door card with 3 screws. I've then got tweeters placed at the base of my A pillar and are barely noticeable. Don't go with rear speakers unless you need them - you probably won't, and even if you do, I would avoid shelf mounted ones like you have been looking at if possible, unless you want the 80's look.

Does your car have a din sized hole anywhere? If so you can have a modern stereo and then cut the front of an 'old' radio and place over the face when parked up. If not use the glove box or an amp and MP3 player works well. Speaker wise you can always mount some speakers under the seats in home made MDF boxes. Assuming you have room......

I've got a few of those 'angled' three way speakers. They're only really great on cars without parcel shelves.

alolympic, have you any pictures of your install?
I got bored with discreet audio when I was looking to upgrade. Replaced the standard stereo with a Sony head unit and put 2x 6x9s in the rear door cards. Does sound much better though.

I have tucked front speakers up under the dash before, you need to put them in large MDF or GRP boxes to get them to sound good. You can sometimes get them in the kick panels if you use slimline speakers.
Speakers are the hardest things to hide.
Tuck a pair under the rear seat or something. Works on Minis, Minors etc for me.

i got an ipod charger/lineout.... crammed it into a small £4.99 amp off of ebay give it some power and some speakers and hid it under my dash grand total: £12.99 for the charger/lineout/amp. means i can leave the roof off and have little concern parking it up and stealing my head unit.

my mate has used a few really neat ideas on his 56 chevy - he has the stereo hidden under a body coloured panel under the dash (but in a glovebox would work) - for the rear speakers, he made a 2nd parcel shelf under the original one, mounted his 6x9's onto that, then on top (in the original shelf) he used 2 pairs of chrome surrounded, black mesh grilles - think they were off a jag of some description - they look super neat, and completely in keeping with the era of the car - the sub and amp, and all that gubbins is in the boot (along with the nitrous bottle )

Forgive me for being a bit dim, bit how do you connect an iPod to an Amp? I've got both and would love to know how - it there a particular connector I need or is something hybrid required. I'm colourblind and, fearful of really messing things up, have always been a bit reticent with electrics!
I've just restored a lovely period Radiomobile and speaker into my lower dash', but it would be great to have something to listen to other than Five Live!
