Ive heard that paypal and ebay are one in the same. Can anyone confirm this? Google seems to be a bit fruitless on that front. My dad just sold (via my ebay) A lucas roofmounted spotlight for a rally car. Needless to say the mini guys love them and it went for alot. Now i got charged £30 odd quid final fee... Ok fair enough. (ish) But i also got charged £20 odd quid to recive the funds Since when did it get that high? Does anyone know if anythings been done about this? As I'm pretty sure thats extortionate. The MAKE you accept paypal. Then charge you for anything and everything you do. On this whole pretence that they are two seperate companys...

I don't think anyone likes Ebay anymore, they love all their buyers and hate all their sellers, and are also muscling in on sales by selling their OWN stuff, as if they weren't making enough money.
All we can do is use Ebay as an advertsing tool to then sell outside ebay, until they get real with their fees.
Although, do you think the lamp would have sold for as much elsewhere?

Although, do you think the lamp would have sold for as much elsewhere? Possibly... But the problem is reaching an audience. Ebay have that covered so i guess I'm paying a premium for that... If id advertised on a select few sites it wouldnt be reaching as far afield as the states or singapore... In the end it went to a guy in france..

I would love to know what they did for there money They set up the world's largest international online auction site and this meant you could sell your stuff online to a potential audience of millions. You think that just magic'd up from nowhere? The fees are detailed up front. If you don't like it, use another service to sell your stuff. I sell my stuff on forums as well as eBay. Forums often don't get as much money for the stuff, sales take longer and way more messers, time wasters and idiot on forums than on eBay. I've a set of wheels at my inlaws I must have "sold" 5 maybe 6 times now. I have sussed more or less what sells best where and sell accordingly. Forums, eBay, car boot sale. eBay doesn't seem to insist you take paypal any more. They did for a wile but you can deselect it. Or maybe that's just on some types of stuff. eBay owns paypal but they are not the same company. The problem is eBay has a virtual monopoly so there is nothing to compare it to really. I go through periods of frustration with it but seriously, its ace. You can buy tat from anywhere in the world and sell your tat back too. Fees are still cheaper than conventional auctions. I sold some furniture at the local auction a while back and they took a bigger slice than eBay does. Also check what ADT or a similar vehicle auction house would charge you to sell your car. The place near me was asking £60 entry fee + a percentage last time I asked a few years ago... I'm astounded by the fees mentioned by the OP, because I sold some Lucas lights for $300 USD (about £200?) and the fees were £11 or so. To get £30 fees by that mark they must have sold for £575 or so? If you use reserves, featured auction, highlights and "themes" you pay more fees. IME these do not result in higher sale price so I just 99p no reserve most stuff.
