all though mk2 golfs are factory built. have a search for a golf country. 4 wheel drive and a hoot to drive, confuses people on a regular basis too.

Buy a small 4x4 with a seperate chassis and drop a small hatchback shell over it, you'll have the ability to match the looks then, don't forget if you lift a stocker up to high you'll get dodgy camber and issues with brak lines needing to be longer, mods to the steering, possible rapid wear of CV joints etc etc.

i'm going more for extreme rally (safari spec?) rather then true off road 4x4 style. How are vw gearbox's for ratios? at the extreme end i might need a 5.something diff! plenty of polos and corsas in the local ads Sorry it's a bit modern, but it pretty close to something id like, but i'd have a bit more external metal work.   |

I kinda like the idea, its a bit different. Reminds me of the Impreza Gravel Express:  and one with a Forrester lift kit ;D  you probably want to avoid it looking like a car on a 4x4 chassis because they look pretty tacky imo. Just a normal car with raised suspension would be very cool  |

A lot of rebodied 4x4's do look terrible, but most are built for bashing off road, theres no reason yu have to build them with the chassis on show and the wheels sticking out, you wouldnt know a Vitara has a seperate chassis looking at a stock one unless you knelt down, any shell the right size could be mounted low enough to cover the chassis and the suspension could be raised up a couple of inches to give the right look as well as actual ability and no worries about the suspension doing things its not supposed to. I posted this one in another thread, it has the right looks I reckon, looks more like a jacked up car than an off roader.  |

already high enough to induce nosebleeds, quite stiff suspension, curse word useful gear ratios for tall tyres, mega economy 50+mpg, cheap to buy (especially a bashed one which would add to the look) plus loads of bolt on gravel/wheel tyre combos from all the ford rally cars out there.
bin the bumpers, replace with scaffolding, set of wheels, big roofrack with rope and jerry cans, etc. job done.
hell, ive just convinced myself, if mine wasnt already decked id be doing it!!

I'd be going for a Subaru if you can find one. It's handle the abuse of off road work more then a little hatch I'd say. I've helped keep a Liberty wagon on the road, and by that I mean putting all the panels back on or straighten them out again. The motor and trans started to give up a about 350,000kms. The last 200,000kms were very hard ones too.
Add on bits are easier to find to. If you break something you don't need to have it made again, just go get one off a shelf.

Those last two are just shells on a purpose built chassis, if its for off road use only maybe you could start with a big quad bike and a Fiat 126 shell (or similar?)
I think you'll be lucky to stay under 800kgs with a road car by the time you've put big heavy wheels and tyres, longer springs, longer shocks, possibly longer suspension components, bash plates, spot lights etc etc on it.
My soft top Vitara weighs just over 1000kgs dry (more now its got bigger wheels and tyres on it) and theres curse word all bdy work on it really.

right decided on a corsa b, can find 4.18 4.19 and a 4.52 cwp for the f13 gearbox, it's weights about 850k's (internet specs are from 800>872) many engines can be made to fit it should i need to go faster. Since I'm sick today i've had the time for photo editing:  raised archs (plastic makes it easy to do) chopped bumpers and the best pic i could find of a gravel tyre  found the steel ice wheel too, eep¬!  popuptoaster: I know their crazy spec safaricomp racers, but since i'm not competing i think the look could be done and still be able to do some gentle green laneing, i don't want just a padock car, small point to remember I'm useing rally gravel tyres which are much lighter then pretty much any 4x4 tyre |
