Got this last weekend for my girlfriend, had to go and collect it on the trailer as it doesnt have any tax or MOT. We were quite suprised at what good condition it was in cosidering it had been stood in the guys back garden for 3 years. It looks pretty solid underneath. don't have any pics of it when we first went see it but some when we got back had to park it on a nearby street when we found out it wouldnt fit in the garage on the trailer My fault didnt think the back end would stick out so far from the back on the trailer. Not too bad a job of parking considering it was the first time we'd ever had to parallel park with a trailer did take quite awhile to get right though haha So the next day arranged with a friend of mine to keep it in his compound so I could work on it. So set out getting it running better, it did run when we collected but very badly just cut out all the time. So I put £10 of fresh petrol in it changed the air filter, fuel filter, oil, and oil filter. also cleaned the carb up a little and sprayed carb cleaner in it. Ran ALOT better after this suprisingly nippy aswell for a 1.0 litre Couldnt do the spark plugs as I couldnt get any as it was sunday tried Halfords but they dit stock any So on monday I started to change the spark plugs 3 came out fine no problems were abit loose 4th one snapped will get a pick of it up tomorrow. So I wasnt sure what to do at this point as this has never happened to me before, I bought a head gasket set as I assumed it would have to be a head off job to get it out. But luckily a friend of mine at a local garage had a look at it before I started to remove the head and broke out the blow torch and managed to get out the remains of the spark plug with an extractor kit ;D Sorry I don't have any pics of this I was too busy praying it would work Haha. As I had to take the inlet manifold off so he could get the spark plug I decied to clean keep the gasket set and replace clean some parts. Painted the rocker cover as it looked really bad all rusty. Have also painted the inlet manifold and exhaust manifold head shield will get pics of these tomorrow as there at my garage. The tyres were completely shot from being stood outside for 3 years all cracked. So as we are trying to get this back on the road cheaply I thought we should just get some new tyres on the standard steels. Had some really good luck a customer at the local garage was selling some Borbet alloys with two new kumho tyres that he had on his astra GSI £100 couldnt say no only £30 more than getting tyres on the standard wheels There a little big for my liking but they'll get it through the MOT then we'll probably sell them and get some 13"-14". Any comments criticism welcome Also is Hammerite under body seal the best stuff to use ? As i really want mkae sure thi doest rust underneath.

Love Polo 'loons, especially in white! I was really keen on getting one a couple of years ago. Looks really smart, bit of a tidy up, a few little bits from PhilJ including a height stick, GT engine (or G40), re-black the bumpers and arches, nice wide 13's and you're there!

Thanks It was just lucky that we got it really we were just searching on ebay when it came up. I'm completely new to the polo scene though, I'm into Honda's myself. Thats the plan, i was thinking 13" alley cats and lowered maybe yellow headlights. hadnt thought about re-blacking the bumpers thats would definately make it look better Also were can i get coilovers or a suspsion kit for it ? Any makes to avoid ? Need to be fairly cheap though.

I've never had an Olop but really researched into the mk2 and 3's when I was looking after I had crashed the Mini. I joined www.clubpolo.co.uk, seemed a fairly good forum back then but haven't been in years as I don't actually own a Polo. If you join and go to the sub-forum 'Jackson Tuning', those are all the bits sold by PhilJ which I think is the best way to go if you're on a budget. He does all types of bits from from performance tuning to aesthetic mods. Full coilover kit is £495, or lowered spring + shock kit is £150/195 depending on what you get. Small update on this i put it all back together and have gotten it running again ;D Also heres a pick of the spark plug that snapped Engine all back toether and running MUCH better, with the new carb gasket flange and spark plugs and fresh coolant. Felt quite abit more responsive. But i noticed a small hole in the backbox So wil probably have to replace that if i cant bodge it. Ill fit a cherry bomb if it needs replacing though. Also little pic to show the mileage

Haha thanks bud Its abit deceptive it looks clean in the pics but has lots of deep scrathes and chips in the paint that are rusting So will probably DIY paint it at some point not sure what colour though really want to avoid matt black but don't want to spend alot doing it Anyone have any ideas on colour ?

Neutral colours seem to work best on these, so things like beige, navy blue, and bottle green. But that said you can get away with really loud colours like lime green and cyan as long as you keep as much of the original trim and have that as clean as possible. Yellow is a great colour for hiding minor dents and dings if you just want to smarten up and a nice pale yellow would work rather well on one of these with all the black trim intact. If you can go metallics, golds, silvers and coppers are best from what I've seen, the metallic blues and blacks don't seem to look as good on the loon as on the coupé. Personally, I'd quite like to see one of these two toned in milk chocolate over old english white and chrome wheel trims. Here's some examples to whet your appetite, not all Classics, but close enough for the purposes. Metallic green. Metallic blue Black Gold (one of the best colours for these) Beige Red (better than brighter red, nice example, see more: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=37240 ) Dark green Bright green (not a Classic, but this colour could work very well.)

if its got sill covers on get 'em off and check for rot, they tend to go around the fixing points.

Check the panel up behind the filler neck in the inner arch,. They are all going there now. The panel that the thick breather pipe goes thru. If it doenst look too bad, Take the driver side rear interior panel off and check in there. If its going allready get on it and get it sorted. You don't want to be trying to weld that up belive me. To do it right means removing the tank and beam.... Ask me how i know

Volkswagongyl I really like it in gold But my Jade (gf) really like the idea of yellow so may go with that but knowing her she'll change her mind haha Also i would be painting it myself, first time painting a car really apart from with rattle cans so would probably want to avoid metallics i imagine there a pain to paint ? Guz It does have sill covers to be honest ive been avoiding taking them off in case it is rusty But ill take them off and have a good look at the sills tomorrow. better to find out now than on MOT day. I havent actually looked yet how do you remove the sill covers is it just some clips or screws ? Retrowagen I had a look at the inner arches and they seem ok but ill have a look where you've said i hope it doesnt need welding as thats something i havent learnt to do yet But ah well i guess i can always learn on this haha Ill update tomorrow with what ive found hopefully not loads of rust fingers crossed

Flat paints are easier than metallics to paint and if you go with a decent yellow base coat there's nothing stopping you getting someone to give it a gold lacquer at a later date for the best of both worlds You either want to go the rattlecan/spray paint with a compressor route or, if you're feeling brave and have a lot of time, the coach paint/other brush or roller applied paint route. As always, to get a good finish on your paint just take your time with preparation and be patient and you should get a nice result. Alternatively, there's a thread up at the moment offering full resprays for £1100... here: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=97924 which is an astonishingly cheap price for any respray really.

Yeah i think it will definaetly have to be a flat colour, a friend has a compresor i could borrow to do the job so will probably go that route, the have someone lacquer it as you said. That respray price is very good I'm quite tempted to get my civic done But we don't have that amount to spend on the polo sadly really just want to get it on the road and looking abit more presentable. It will be quite a while before we do anything with paint as it needs MOT tax and cambelt doing before we can paint it. But i may try and do the cambelt myself it looks very simple on the polo ?

ok i am incredibly jealous lol been wanting one of those for agessss looks really tidy aswell (lucky buggers ) if your wanting help with it o noticed you have been recommended to clup polo you should also try out www.polo3.co.uk as they are more general to the older polos (pre 95) where as club polo is just a general polo site for all models

Haha its not that tidy Yeah I'm on polo3 aswell as I joined club polo and they recomended me to polo3 (which is now full of post from me asking questions haha) thanks though bud I pulled the sill cover back abit (not quite sure how they are meant to come off ?? thought it was screws at first but look like plastic rivets didnt want to just pull it though incase I break anything) Theres abit of rust only at the back ends of both sills it then runs up the arch a little at both sides. I'm thinking its because of the plastics trapping in moisture. It seems to still be fairly solid though so will wire brush it all and treat and paint it for the time being. Also took the interior panel off and had a look...well I had to use my phone to take pics so I could see it properly couldnt see it otherwise... Only seems to be this thing thats rusted I'm not sure what it is though I thought for a horrible moment it was the fuel tank filler pipe but then saw that, thats in the inner arch. Not sure what to do about this pipe thing though as it aint half awkward to get at. Should I just sand it all down treat and paint it ? Also i sanded down one of the rear light bulb holders as the previous owner seems to have used batroomsealnt to hold on the light cover......it didnt work as it lets in water, and rusted the holder up. So all the lights work now. Apart from the reverse lights and I'm sure that one of them worked when we first picked up. Checked the fuses but non of them look blown, Also have no idea what which fuse does what is there one specifically for the reverse lights ?? Or could it be something else as I'm stumped

That inner panel looks fine mate. When they go that whole breather tube( thats what it is btw ) falls clean off Get yourself down halfords. Get some hamerite rust killer stuff. Paint it on. Then paint over it all with some hamerite paint or somthing. Keeps it all clean and rust free. Seems you caught it in time Do the outside too if you can wiggle a brush into the gap behind the filler neck. As for the reversing light. Just clean the connections on the bulb holder? They get pretty damp in the boot so get corroded up easy.

Ah well thats some good news thanks for pointing it out as somewhere to check it would never have occured to me to check there is there anywhere else they tend to go ? Haha ah so thats what it is, is that an MOT failure just out of interest ? As I felt it and undereath I think its rusted through a little ? Right will do job for tomorrow sand it down treat and slap on some hammerite ;D think the sills will get the same treatment, then waxyoil over that. Ill try giving the connecters a clean as I havent done that just cleaned up the holder, also on the polo forum someone said check the switch but didnt say where it is or anything

sill covers are just plastic rivets, pop em off, i'd bin the covers tbh.
reverse light switch is on the gearbox, you don't need a reverse light for MOT so don't worry about it.
