well, aside from mums bike I had my 11yr old pestering me for a RC car as his "mates" have £650 and £350 ones needless to say that wasnt going to happen, I explained to him I could get a cool ass vw for that money (he didnt see my logic sadly ) anyways a post on another forum led me to this, I know nothing about them at all but after a morning in my local model shop where i dropped onto a 20yr old ex RC racer he got the motor running and gave it a bit of general TLC. I got the whole package, car, radio gear and two batteries for £50 which now ive seen my lads reaction and the prices just the cars are fetching on ebay I'm well chuffed. two niggles though are, how can i extend the battery life so he can run the car for more than the "roughly 5-10 mins" at the mo. we're using 1 battery then changing to the other but can anyone recommend a better solution or is it just the industry standard so to speak that you only get 10 mins from a charge?? other thing is the little blue box in the car is very tempremental at the mo. it simply wont work one time the car is switched on the other times it does. is it worth changing this, if so whats it called ;D so I can look for a replacement on the net. I was warned these things become addictive and sure enough spent last night looking for different bodies and other "faster" mods already

Well the batteries are the biggest things, you can get up to 4000mah batteries now. And the bigger the better!
The little blue blox is called the speed controller and they generally don't go wrong unless they blow up. They aren't the cheapest to replace though.
The rc10 b3 was the dogs when i did model car racing about 10 years back.
Very jealous would love one of those now. Hope this helps you out.

I'm afraid that between 5 and 10 minutes is about right for the batteries - when I used to race (ahem 17 or 18 years ago) it was always '5 minutes plus the lap that you're on' so the cars were always geared for that. The only way to improve that is to use a lower spec motor.
That said, those 'Tamiya' style battery connectors were always a bit wibblepoo and got warm (hence wasted energy), so better connectors would help a little. I used 'powerpole' ones, but 'Corally' were considered the best back in my day. No idea what's around now! lol
I found my Traxxas Blue Eagle truck and my Losi XX out the other day, might get some batteries and go playing again! lol

When i used to do indoor racing, we use to do battery changes half through a 10 lap race. That was using a mega fast motor. The other option was using a slower motor and getting better battery life. Hare and the tortoise really. Great fun

I found my Traxxas Blue Eagle truck and my Losi XX out the other day, might get some batteries and go playing again! lol I used to have a Blue Eagle II. It was always good fun, especially on the beach. The blue box is an electric speed controller. I've always found the fancy race speed controllers to be unreliable. I've got an old Futaba speed controller which has been completely reliable and as a plus has reverse. Maybe have a look for one of those. As for batteries, how are you charging them? By discharging them properly and charging them with a digital fast charger you'll improve their life span.

hi guys,
sorry for late reply been in hozi with the little one all w/end.
the batteries are whats in the pic, not sure of make but they are 1500 7.2v
are you saying if I get 4000 they will last longer, if so how much longer (roughly) ??
as for charging/discharging, the model shop said as it was a 1500 my charger would charge them to full in 3hrs. we run them in the car until car stops and then recharge next day etc etc etc......am i doing something wrong
whats this lipo battery I hear of, good or bad, hard to use/charge or easy, any advice would be great

I had 4000MAH in my yokomo mr4tc special (still got it ) And i could get 20mins nearly out of a pack... Get a new speedcontroller. And use decent battery connectors. Re-solder any connections to the motor, Ive its a brushed motor get the brushes out and check em/ clean em. Then check the pinion gear isnt too tight against the spur gear. Its all about getting it running freely. And not loseing any other power thru heat or friction. These connectors are what i used for my batterys. cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ripmax-4.0mm-gold-RC-connectors-New,-for-battery-leads!_W0QQitemZ310194223605QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=210314126375&rvr_id=210314126375&cguid=fcf8d21612d0a47a44d6db96ff08d737#ht_500wt_715 If you get a speed controller with no reverse youll see better run times. But obviously No reverse... On the box for your car , See the battery in the middle? Thats made of individual matched cells. If you are competent with a soldering iron thats what id do. Buy individual cells. Get a multimeter and check each one. Then match the best ones into one pack. Worked for me... Some people go further with the idea and match it so they work from higest to lowest voltage along the string... But i don't see the benifits...

Oh and what charger are you using? If its an old acoms one like most people ran. I wouldnt bother with it anymore. mine got progressivly worse as time went by.
Even a ripmax cheapo smart charger would see better battery life.

retro, thanks for all the info. I'm not competent at anything let alone a solder the model shop guy re solered connectors onto the blue/white motor wires and opened the motor up and cleaned the brush things, he also matched the gears up, he said they needed to mesh correctly the charger is just what came with the car tbh, so presume its old i think i'll get a couple of 4000 batteries and see how I go, he's only 11 so thinks a 3hr charge should give a 3hr "play time" kids logic, hard to explain adult logic to em, wish kid logic ruled, world would be a better place imo ;D I'm gonna go back to the model shop, get him to check the ripmax box and also look at the solders to see if I can stop it not working then wiggle the wires and it works (if nowt else so I don't look a div on the sand jumps when son is all giddy and ready to "race"
