Well, Amazo's excellent Prototype thread has got me thinking about cars that should of gone into production. Obviously there's the one's that never made it past development but there's also the 'fantasy' ones that I'm sure we've all thought about from time to time and wondered why the forces that be didn't have the foresight to fulfil our automotive wonderment. So which ones do you have floating around your mind? What would you of built given the resources of that particular marque at the time?
Here's a few of mine for your perusal.
Ford Focus RS Cosworth
Okay, so it doesn't have to come with the Cosworth name but just imagine if Ford had decided to go after Subaru and Mitsubishi not only on the rally stages, but on the street too. Instead of the FWD, torque steering, rude-boy that was the Focus RS, imagine that instead it was a street legal rally car, with a stereo. Using the 2.0 Zetec lump that the RS used, it would be mated up to a larger Garrett turbo charger and intercooler to get it closer to the 300bhp mark the 1999 WRC car produced while also bastardising the Escort Cosworth for it's 4WD system. Sure, it would of been expensive, but how entertaining would it be to see one chasing down the latest Evo incarnation?
Mk4 Ford Fiesta S
The Mk4 Fiesta is perhaps the least desired generation of all the Fiesta's these days. Despite being the best selling car in the UK in it's heyday it is now seen as the ugly duckling of the long running model. I think this is partly due to the fact that there was no performance model available, nothing to aspire to if you will. While the Mk3 had the XR2i, the RS Turbo, the RS1800 and the remodelled Si the Mk4 was seen as a shopping trolley of a car, with nothing more jazzy than a wheezy 1.4 available in petrol form, making it somewhat uninspiring for the younger driver. My vision for the 'S' would be to use the relationship with Mazda that Ford had at the time (the Mk4 was also released as the Mazda 121) and utilise their excellent 1.8 BP engine, most commonly found in the MX5 but also in the 323 and the North American Ford Escort. Handling would be sorted by using the setup found in the Mk4 based Ford Puma, which at the time was known to be one of the best handling small cars around. With some subtle bodystyling tweaks I think the Fiesta S would of been a great seller as well as an entertaining drive.

Theres a few for me... *1= mk2 polo saloon GT . I allways have and allways will love polo saloons. But theres something about a mars red loon lowered with black detailing. I never did finish mine but it was heading toward a GT theme with optional vw wheels. Black detailing/ GT script along the side and a mk2 coupe S engine on MPI A car i think VW should definatly have built. 2= Vw santana G60. I realy realy think a santana g60 would have been amazing. They arnt slow for big ol busses in either 1.8 or 5 pot form. But charged would be better But not with the normal G60 4 banger.... Use the audi derived 5 pot and make a real screamer out of it... Lowered over some bbs g60 rims..... 3= Lotus Carlton ESTATE. ^ that is all. ;D

mk1 Mondeo RS - the optional RS kit (both styles) made the mk1 Mondeo look pretty awesome imo, just never had the guts to back it up, the 2.0 cossie turbo lump wouldn't have been much work really to squeeze in with the 4x4 drivetrain, its been done a couple of times. Still have to make do with a Citrine yellow Si Mondeo i guess

In fact only yesterday I was saying that the Escort 4wd system, tried and tested, should have been put into a factory Focus from the off. BMW E35 Coupe/ConvertibleThere have been a couple of photoshops and one or two actually made, but a replacement 6 series after the E24, based on the E32/4 platform, would have been just lovely. It would have slotted in above the E36 Coupe and below the E31 8-series, which was priced quite a lot higher. There was a gap there that didn't get plugged until the new 6-series came out in like 2004-ish.

They should have used the Jag 3.0 V6 on Mk1/2 mondeo and put the 4WD system off the 2.0 4X4 mondeo (suitabley beefed up preferably), i allways thought there was room for a modern day "Savage" conversion out there for that swap

Nissan Maxima / QX estate, Laurel estate. Agreed. If they made a late C32 in estate form I'd be driving one. A C130 estate would look pretty sweet too.

mk3 cortina van that way i could have just bought one and not had to make one ;D but that said if fords had made one they would have just as much of a balls up of it as they have with pretty much every mass produced car they have ever made and it would still have needed a curse word load of work to get it to look right ;D

I have always thought they should have built a K11 Micra/March Turbo. Its logic really as Toyota had the Starlet Turbo at the time and Nissan didnt really have a suitable rival for it! They could have used an updated version of the cherry turbo 1.5 engine so it would have still been a cheap to tax car like the Starlet. And styling could have been in a similar vien to the NME Micra (ill try and find a picture of one), Micras handle alright anyway so would have only needed a few tweaks and brakes could have been sorted using the popular Sunny vented disk swap. See its just logic!

Vw santana G60. Sorry mate Sorry mate I'll partially disagree there what they should have done was keep the awesome 5pot, nothing better, but then bolted the bl00dy great turbo to it that Audi used in the legendary B2 80's and as the engine was mounted longways should have dropped the fail wheel drive and made it rear wheel drive for all models and then quatro'd the turbo version.. I guess for me this thread could go on in a whole load of different directions, of cross hybrids etc as said abouve, Lotus Carlton estate = WIN Focus cosworth - could have had great potential.. Sierra cosworth estate = again win

See initially thats what i thought. But then vw and supercharging is just somthing they do/Did. So going by that thoretically it would have been supercharged. I'm all for a big scary turbo. But if it becomes an audi underneath you may as well buy an audi... And keeping it sorta vw keeps it just that little bit different

Ford Pop RS Cosworth. With the F1 derived 8000rpm 100hp sidevalve, no seatbelts and cable brakes Something like a Lotus Nova to compliment the Carlton would have been cool ;D A Brabus stacklight Merc would probably be on my shopping list too.

As for the focus cosworth ford did plan to build one but apparently the mk1 focus would have needed too much modification for 4wd and would have been too costly. Although they did say they could use the North American Focus as it is slightly longer, like they did with the WRC cars, they still said it would be too costly. Then on the release of the mk2 they said that they had designed it so that they could run 4wd easier although no models did in the end. I am guessing again it was a cost thing. I would have liked to have seen a citroen ZX T16 4wd
