A mate of mine has a project which is powered by the drive-train from an Mk2 Cortina; it’s a early 1600 crossflow (681M) engine and matching 3-rail 4-speed gearbox. Whilst he has the chassis stripped to fit a new body to it, he thought it might be a good time to upgrade the 4-speed box to a 5-speed from a Sierra.
He wants to do the conversion as cheaply as possible and would rather like to keep the clutch hydraulic rather than convert to the more usual cable route. I’ve done a fair bit of Googling on his behalf (confusers are not his forte) but most of what I’ve read is aimed at those fitting the 5-speed to Pinto engines or to 711M crossflows that are in cars with cable clutches already.
So, is it possible to do the conversion and retain a hydraulically actuated clutch? If it is, what parts can be reused from the Cortina?
Cheers,
Rich
