Do you want to do it enough... It's hard to stay keen on a project when it takes a long time, always new problems popping up, new costs (tools and consumables alone...) Trust me! I bought a car I was mad about but after changing the gearbox, then having to dop it all out again for a different gearbox, then again to replace the ringear on the flywheel, replacing the diff, halfshafts, shelling out a lot of money for welding & paint and then 2 years on having to do a lot of welding myself (it is not as easy as you may imagine it to me! Lying under a car with your head in a gap too small for a mask, sun burnt eyelids & hot bits of metal dropping in your lap!) Hours of cutting & grinding & forming repair panels.. I now hate the car & can't wait to see the back of it Not trying to put you off but these things always seem a great idea until you start & come across endless problems, limited skills etc. Of course I have another project lined up & I'm coming back for more A wiseman once said 'Never build what you can buy'

rangerbob: Cor... that's something else, enjoyed reading that! Not the route I want to go since I'm not after high performance, but certainly inspirational. popuptoaster: I like the using the front of a Polo in the back notion, that feels like it would be a good way to keep everything not only in the family but from the same car. ruishy1: Now that I've got the time to sit and reply properly, I do like the 4x4 idea, I'd forgotten that a 4x4 can be transverse engined up front and that does give me the benefit of keeping the interior looking mostly as it does as well as giving me some improvement to traction. I like this option a lot. composimmonite: likewise the 4x4 option is very appealing it seems more versatile as a finished product. However, I'm not so keen on the high-riding look since that detracts from the sneaky sleeper thing I'm wanting to do with this. However, the youtube link did hop me to one or two examples that claimed to be 4x4 but were less clear on how it was achieved, so my curiosity is piqued. craig1010cc: Someone suggested front-mounted bike engine at the meet tonight (probably sheffieldcortinacentre now I think about it) and I have to admit it's another tempting option since it makes a lot of sense. The exhaust I have a solution to: I plan to run lakes pipes along the sills so they sit no lower than the car. Agreed, all of the above require a great deal of work, some more than others, but it has really been an eye opener for me, and continues to be so, with so many ideas, options, solutions and problems appearing. @stooby: Very wise words indeed! The big reason for me wanting to use 1 donor vehicle is that it cuts cost and theoretically cuts the trouble of mating up mechanical components. This is something I want to do enough, I think, but my enthusiasm has been healthily curbed by all the advice and opinions put forth which I'm thinking is a very good thing indeed. ___ I think I need to go through this post end to end and decide which options are closest to what I want and why and to actually decide what it is I want from this based on the information provided. I'm under no illusion that this will be easy or straightforward and I'm not going to be wading into this part of the project for a couple of years yet I suspect... BUT... I want to get the RWD thing done as much as I've wanted to get the rest of the car done so I know it is possible with proper planning, patience and of course enough money. In the most rational sense this is a ludicrous thing to want to do because the car functions just as it should... but when did any of us into our modified motors let that stop us doing things because it would be cool? You've all been awesome, and if anyone thinks of anything to add feel free, but be aware I'm now going to be collating info and doing a lot of thinking before I make a post of any great meaning here beyond this one. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love this place.
