For sale is my 1989 F reg BMW 525i SE Automatic Saloon in Arctic Blue.
It has done 157,749 miles and is 22 years old. That is an average of less than 7,500 miles a year.
I have only had it for about 4 months as a stop gap, but I now need something a bit bigger (Transit van or preferably LWB 4x4) so unfortunately I have to let it go.
The SE model is the crème de la crème and is absolutely machine gunned with toys. All the toys on this car are fully functional and are as follows:
Front fog lights
Thermostatic climate control
4 x electric windows
Electric mirrors
Electric tilt and slide sunroof
Central locking
JVC CD player
3 way adjustable front seats with adjustable arm rests
Later 5 speed automatic gearbox (much better MPG than the earlier 4 speed)
I have spent quite a lot of time and money on the car in this short period of time.
The following work has been done (all with receipts):
New rear shock absorbers
Full Service
Cam Belt Change (with tensioner)
Water Pump Change
Aux Belt Change (alternator and PAS belts)
Coolant change
4 replacement tyres
New flexi fuel lines (from the rigid under car lines to the fuel rail)
Replacement boot lid hydraulic rams as the old ones were totally shot (common problem)
Fitted JVC CD player in place of the very tired original unit
Brakes stripped, checked, greased and refitted
Please bear in mind that the mileage will increase very slightly as the car is still in daily use.
The car drives exactly as a proper BMW should. It's quiet, quick, smooth and comfortable.
The automatic gearbox is excellent (much better than the Mercedes 190e I had before!) and changes gear exactly when it should without a moments hesitation (including kick down and manual mode). The engine pulls just as it should (very hard) and the interior is like driving in your favourite armchair!
The car has 12 1/2 months MOT (until February 24th 2012), only failing the last one on 4 tyres and headlight aim. It also has road tax until the end of February 2011.
This engine is the M20 engine which is the 12 valve 6 cylinder, 171bhp unit.
The MPG I have been getting is about 20mpg round town and 32mpg on a run which I'm sure you'll agree is excellent for a 6 cylinder engine on an automatic gearbox in such a heavy car.
This is a very unusual engine / gearbox combination because it has the later 5 speed automatic gearbox. As far as BMW are concerned, they only ever fitted the 4 speed automatic gearbox to the M20 engine so this is the car BMW claim they never made! The 5 speed gearbox results in much better fuel economy and means the car will cruise at 80mph at only 2,800 rpm.
It also has a very new looking tow bar, but only has single electrics so you know the auto box hasn't been mashed by towing massive caravans all its life!
Bad Bits:
The bodywork does have the odd car park dink and small scrape here and there and the bonnet badge is missing but nothing catastrophic. Only really marks consistent with the cars age and mileage.
The front seats have a few very minor signs of wear but no tears or massive stains.
The radio reception is terrible so I just listen to CD's!
The glove box does open and shut as it should, but feels a bit loose when closing. This doesn't appear to affect its functionality in any way and still happily takes weight inside it and stays closed.
The central locking needs operating from either the boot lock or the passenger front door. It sometimes works from the drivers side but not very often. When you try to lock it from the drivers side, the button doesn't go all the way down so it unlocks itself again when you remove the key. This has only started happening in the last week or so, but it still locks and unlocks perfectly from the boot and the passenger front door.
The fuel gauge can sometimes have a 'senior moment'. This doesn't happen very often and the fuel light is still accurate.
One alloy wheel centre cap is missing, presumed stolen.
That really is it. Not a bad list of faults for a car nearly as old as me!
In summary, she's an old girl but with plenty of life left in her and is an absolute pleasure to waft along in, with plenty of power on tap when required. The ultimate in champagne motoring for lemonade money.
Collection is much preferred from the Lincolnshire village of Martin (post code LN4 3QY).
I can however deliver the car anywhere in the mainland UK for a pre arranged and pre paid fee (basically covering petrol plus a few beer tokens!). Please email me with your postcode for a quote.
Any questions, please ask.
