My Google Fu is weak. All I find is ancient forum posts asking the same thing and people saying its illegal. Basically, Mrs Ku has a Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.2 CRD which is the Mercedes tractor-spec POS common rail (same as Vito and similar I am told) I don't want to about with twin tank conversions and such, I want to do like my chums with older Diesels do which is just chuck veg oil in the tank with the regular diesel. I have heard this will make kittens die, nuns run riot and the engine explode into a million pieces. Instantly. Anyone know? Sorry for the OT. Shall I pretend I intend to install the motor into an Avenger or something?

Firstly it's not illegal, you're allowed 2,500 litres per year. *Technically/legally you have to declare it and the rule used to be that if you used brand new (off the supermarket shelf) veg oil you had to pay the same rate of excise duty as diesel attracts. So no cheaper then, in fact more expensive these days.
Next to be absolutely certain if you Google something like 'list of cars that will run on veg oil' you should find a website with a list of suitable motors. Bosch pumps are your friend, Lucas/Cav ones do not like it and it attacks the seals on the pumps and causes you agro.
According to a friendly local(ish) diesel injection specialists common rail diesels don't like veg oila nd will eventually gum up and cause wallet lightening problems. Now to be fair they may have meant SVO (used veg oil) and it might not have been filtered/mixed properly. Bit of a cop out but I'd suggest if you're not sure and can't get a cast iron guarantee it won't do any harm then probably best to avoid.
Aside from that some older cars actually run smoother and quicker on it and they get better economy I kid you not. If using SVO then regular fuel filter changes are a must.

SVO= straight veg oil ( brand new stuff) WVO= waste veg oil
Just for clarification purposes.
TBH unless you can get free oil from a chip shop etc, its more agro than its worth.

it depends on price, most places have clicked and now oil is close to the same price as diesel, some places you can get it cheap but not many

My cav TD runs alot better on used oil. Have to change the filter fairly regularly though, but I only strain it through 400micron paint filters. Have to keep the mix below 10-15% with winter temps though. The cav also has a pre filter heating element as well, which helps.

Cash & Carry veg oil - £1.05 a litre. Petrol station diesel - £1.31 a litre.
40 litres is a £12 difference.
if the ol' smoker will eat the stuff without getting indigestion.
I'm aware of the legalities on the tax. most of the infor my google wads bringing up was 2005-2007 vintage.

Common rail is a definate no-no for a one tank system, the injectors don't like the gummy residue or viscosity of it. Especially not in cold weather, as it thickens up at a higher temperature than dino diesel. Older diseasels with a bosch or bosch clone pump usually love SVO. Lucas, Rotodiesel and CAV pumps really really don't like it and can take a surprisingly short distance to start to snap the main spinny shafty bit in the middle.

my bosch pump loves it runs better starts better goes better.i only use new veg oil though.still cheaper than derv.and it smells great to .as for crd chryslers I wouldnt even put derv in it just sell it and buy a diesel with no electronic gubbins on it it makes life so much easier.and just another point i think your car will have a vm derv in it not a merc .so thats italian

It's a Mercedes. The horrifically expensive parts even come in Mercedes branded boxes.
Selling it isn't an option and she'd doubtless buy somethin newer if she did.

Used to cost me about £1.20 for 3 litres when I used it 50/50 in my old T4. Don't see the point at the price it is now. Biodiesel seems to be fairly straight forward to produce if Used oil is still available in these Mad Max times.

Apparently I can get proper biodiesel for 95p a litre locally so that is probably the easy answer.

How you working that out though? 50/50 in an 80 litre tank? I only used to run 50/50 in the summer. And once you've factored in an extra £10/£20 every so often for a fuel filter. I'd go biodiesel if you've got a local source, all above board then. I was told when I used to use Veg oil to have a 25L barrel at home with proof of Taxation so if I ever did get caught I had some backup.
