Mot beckons, and I need to set up the carb on the COrtina. It's a Weber 32/36 progressive type of affair. Are there any foolproof methods of getting it running well? Doesn't have to be perfect, but at the moment if tends to stall as soon as you stamp on the gas, and ticks over a bit lumpy. Thanks, Olson

Hmm, that's the same carb that's on the XR3 and XR2 isn't it? Should be a fair bit of knowledge about them on here and on the interweb...
Have you given the jets a good clean out?

Haven't touched anything on it yet, wanted to ask for some advice first before I steam in and cock it up! ;D

Sounds like the accelerator pump. Check its working (look down the mouth of the the carb and quickly squirt the throttle. You should see fuel squirt out)

wanted to ask for some advice first before I steam in and cock it up! ;D why ? does it settle down with some constant revs on ? Like 1500, or is it still lumpy then ? Could be an air leak

Not too worried about air leaks and stuff at the moment, jsut wondered if there's a 'universal' setting for the screws etc that should make it run ok, or at least driveable?

The Haynes manuals used to give default settings for carbs. When I rebuilt the carb on my Skoda Rabid they gave you the basic settings (2 and a half turns for the idle screw... that kind of thing...) Is it a standard carb on a standard engine? If so the manual might tell you. If it's not standard then the settings won't mean much. So long as you remember the positions of the idle screws etc., having a tinker shouldn't mess anything up. Like slater says, the acceleratior pump is an easy one to tell - just have a squint down the barrels and see if it's squirting when you pull the throttle lever
