Sadly not a 300ZX I have just won a 1995 Citroen ZX 1.9D automatic for my mam to use after the auto box on her Hyundai Accent gave up the ghost. Anybody know what these cars are like?. I remember that Top Gear in the 90s used to like them, so they cant be too bad anyway, pictures of the beast........ Not bad for £385 Anybody got any cool pictures of these (especially in black) as I have a feeling she wont want it standard for long (cool mum FTW ;D)

I had the manual 1.9, was hatefuly slow. It used to handle ok, but that meant I was slowing less and less for the bends so as not to scrub off speed. And because it was so gutless, I used to end up trashing it to try and get it to go and only getting 50MPG even on a long M way run from it. Could only stick it for 3 months, swapped it for a mk2 golf Gti Which was one of the best cars I owned, so it did have its good side ;D

My grandmother had one - great little car. If it has starting trouble, it's probably the glowplugs. It's worth letting the engine idle until the glowplug light has turned off when you start it - they plugs last longer that way.
Supposedly they handle quite well too.

Yep, its a non turbo diesel, so at least I don't have to worry that she will get a speeding ticket (again ) Might just be using the car until she can find something else anyway (maybe a TD version?)

The one I mentioned above was a 1.9 non-T D. From what I remember it wasn't exactly a rocket ship, but it bowled along quite happily once up to speed.

It's a Peugeot 306 in drag, so as well as sharing the usual 4x108mm PCD (making decent rims easy to find), ZX's share most of the 306's common problems (seized rear suspension beams, knock front drop links out for fun etc etc). Not bad motors, just simple basic A-B transport. Just check all the electrics work (it's French). Engines last forever if they are well-maintained. The non-turbo 1905 in my old BX was still going strong at 250k.
Woefully slow without a turbo though even in manual form. Sludgematics have the acceleration properties of a glacier.

Hey, has it had a cambelt change 'cos I've got a belt and tensioner in parts for sale! Dirty cheap at 13 quid posted.
Blatant sale over, my neighbour's got one on the drive right now and it looks quite tidy. Always fancied a Volcane one (was that the name?) with the boxy arches. On another note, when I used to use aged C15s for couriering we just used to give them loads of heat to start if they were playing up. Didn't do 'em much good, but then they did start...

as BD said, (though the ZX was out first, by over a year at least!) though I'd add as others have, they are one of the best chassis PSA have put out for a long time, 205 was renowned, 309 improved and tamed it, ZX/306 platrorm improved on it, 405 was slightly bigger and still awesome black one right here

I think hg's are the only thing to watch on the 1.9d otherwise good for high miles. I remember test driving a Volcane when they had just been launched, I was only about 18, my dad drove it around the corner than we swapped seats and used some fuel! My mother bought one some years later, great chassis.

we had one when I was younger, non turbo version. it wasnt the quickest car but was pokey enough for motorway runs, we took it over to france on booze trips loads of times would happily cruise at 70mph with a bootful (and a bit lol) of booze and never complained once, used it for towing a trailer tent and never did less than 45-50mpg. In the end the headgasket went (not its fault this is why you should never buy a car that had the HG fixed at halfords (back when they repaired cars) and we got it from a cop. But while we had it it was one of the best cars we'd had and that was only a J reg one.

They are great cars I have a 1.9 turbo d volcane and it is absolutely amazing. As said the chassis is very well set up although if you want to improve it there is alot of parts out there as the 306 is the same. I used mine to take me to germany in september then in december my flight back was cancelled due to ridiculous snow so the trusty zx was called into duty and never missed a beat. I hadnt even started it in 2 months and it fired up straight away despite this and the fact it was covered in 2 foot of snow (no exaggeration!). So technically they are also better than aeroplanes!

I used to have a 2.0 (petrol) Volcane, and it was brilliant! One thing you will notice though... the cords that hold the parcel shelf up will always be hanging out the side of the boot when it's closed!

I've got a 1.9D and it's a brilliant little car. It handles ok, though I have nearly spun it once or twice But performance isn't why you bought it. It'll sit in traffic all day, 70/80 is comfortable, the seats are ok, and the room in the back is ok. There's enough room in the back, and with the seats down the boot is massive. Did well in the snow too (apart from the locks freezing every day!).
