It's been a while since I sold my last retro, an MG Montego, and have been missing the fact I haven't got anything to tinker with. I have also got a border collie puppy (Jess) in the meantine, and she takes up a lot of time and wants loads of attention. So, I wanted something a bit old and cool, needs a few bits and pieces doing and would keep the wife and the dog happy. Got to be a camper van! I thought, better than the tent we used last year, can't afford a VW with the added scene tax, narrowed it down to a Bedford CF, Commer or Transit. So the search began, I bid on few on ebay, most ended early, looked at some wrecks advertised in the free ads and finally found "Fred" as it has been called by the last few previous owners, on the Transit owners website. We went and viewed it on Thursday, liked what we saw and the deal was done, sure it needs a few bits sorted out, bit of welding, some little electrical gremlins and the wife is going to do a bit of refurb on the interior cushions etc. I might add some blue retro stripes to go with the interior as I think it looks a little bit to white. Any ideas for retro accessories and stripe designs most welcome. I am really looking forward to the 3 of us travelling around our great country and taking in a good few car shows along the way. Here's some pics as it is now, nicked from the sales advert as I haven't got any of my own yet. Roll on summer

Sweet ;D I used to have one exactly the same except I fitted later lights to mine, they are surprisingly usefull, if you pop the roof and leave one side down they are great for watching motorsport from the dry and warm ;D or bird watching ect what ever floats yer boat, also make a good base for taking pics as well One of the few of my Ex cars i miss

Nice one. Nice that the upholstery isnt some horrid twee floral pattern that every camper I've had has been. And is that a collie pup?

Gorgeous camper, its huge lumps cooler than an aircooled dub. I daresay a damn sight more useable too. Very pretty puppy too

That's one super clean looking van, definitely a good point to start from. Having a nosey around the interwebs spotted a few things that might work. Imagine this in white over blue instead of yellow over black Or a little bit of this. Or perhaps even a bit of Supervan 2 inspired decals, which if I were to do it I'd just replace 'super' with 'camper' for giggles. That has to be one the fluffiest, cutest border collie pups I've ever seen too, utterly adorable.

Now that is a fantastic looking camper! What welding needs doing to it as it looks really very clean? I assume these use a Pinto? If so I hope it's a 2 litre? Keep us updated, lovely Transit (and collie!)

Thanks for the replys guys
I am liking the RS2000 style stripe in a mid to light blue to go with the interior, could look good.
I will take a straight on side photo and mock it up in Photoshop to see.
It doesn't need a lot of welding I think as most of it has been done last year from what I can tell from the receipts I have, there is a hole in the drivers side step but at the top so not structual. I am getting it up on a ramp next saturday to see what's needed underneath, hopefully not to much.
The camper had a reconditioned 2000cc engine fitted in 2008, and has covered 6800 miles since, it was originally a 1600cc.
Taking it out tomorrow for a run to a camping superstore to get a loo for it (gonna be handy after a few beers) and some bits and pieces.
I will keep you posted as the work makes some progress.

I had a bit of time spare after work today so had a play mocking up some stripe ideas, got a few more ideas to play around with when I get time. Getting the van up on the ramp tomorrow to have a good look underneath (wish me luck) and tighten up the exhaust which is blowing at the front downpipe. Focus chequer design ST style Supervan style Retro design Two tone style

Good news from yesterday , had a good poke about underneath and only needs 2 small patches of welding under the nearside front wheelarch, happy days, eveyrthing else solid. Tightened up the exhaust and set the points correctly and took off down to the New Forest today, Frank run like a dream. Have decided to go with a two tone theme for the exterior once I have tidied up and treated the little bits of corrosion, watch this space.

can't belive it's been 3 months since my last post, I have finaly had some time to get the camper ready and it's coming together nicely. I have made a start on the 2 tone bodywork, got all the blue on the bottom sections done and I have got a few stripes to finish off higher up, should have those done this week. The wife has made a great job making new covers for the rear cushions and some material sections for the front seats. I am having a new carpet made for the cab area as the old one was completly shot. Got the wheels painted this weekend and I think they look realy nice in diamond white with the chrome rings. I managed to sorce a low mileage replacement gearbox for £75 which is being fitted this week because the syncro had gone on 3rd to 4th and was bit of pain changing up. Here is some pics of my progress so far, just looking forward to some retro camping now (when it stops raining). Oh and Jess has grown a bit to!
