Still drunk on the success of the DIY air intake, I started to wonder what else could be done with simular methods. I picked up an oil cooler aaaaages ago to strap to the front of the Escort, but I never quite got round to sorting out getting oil pipes made up, sandwich plates sourced for the oil filter and all that pallava. But it struck me earlier today, wouldnt ducting cold air from the front of the car directly onto the oil filter work just as well? Cooling all oil that passes through it? Does this miracle pipe know no bounds?!? (or is this a stupid idea, hence why no one else has done it....)

It will help to a certain extent as will one of those aluminium heat sinks that sits over top of the filter, but it wouldnt be as good as an oil cooler. Also a decent oil cooler setup should include an oilstat to stop the oil being overcooled.

Sorry for thread hijack, but on a related topic are there any production vehicles which have an oil cooler I could easily find in a scrappy? Something wide but not too tall suitable for hanging under a bumper, need not actually be functional.......

Loads of cars with autoboxes have transmission coolers - usually very narrow and short. Can't think of anything offhand. Or air con rads Something big,diesel and auto. Have a gander in it's engine bay ;D

A lot of modern cars have water cooled sandwich plate types behind the oil filter, never tried removing one though, might be worth a look. Other than that the only definites I can think of are AE86 (might struggle to find one though ) and opel monza.

depending on the state of tune on the escort, an oil cooler could do more harm than good.

Yeah your right, suppose it wouldnt really work effectively because it would be cooling all of the time and not thermostatically controlled Escort doesnt need an oil cooler yet, but after the planned mods it will definately help. I'll just get the one i've got plumbed in properly, no cutting corners I picked my cooler off an early metro- don't know if they had them fitted as standard or what, it was just there! ;D

But getting them off is a nightmare I'm afraid.

Mk1 Golf GTI has a nice little standard fit air to oil cooler if you can find one of those. The pipes have standard 1/2 bsp fittings so should connect up to a Mocal sandwich plate or similar. Be careful using a secondhand cooler though, could have debris in it and wreck your engine, they are very difficult to flush out thoroughly.
