As this is Retro Rides, I'm guessing a fair few of you know your stuff when it comes to carbs. Perhaps you could shed some light on something for me. My Polo has developed a weird problem, it's been going on all winter where the revs will drop at idle to about 500rpm (I think it's supposed to be at 800-900). I've been sitting at the lights sometimes and they'll just drop, or it'll settle lower when I come to a stop. Also, when it's cold out, the engine doesn't tick over smoothly, it kind of 'chugs', if that makes any sense. It's got a Pierburg 2E3 carb on there, and I know I should really get a webber, but I can't afford it at the moment. cheers in advance! ;D

Not too sure on Pierburg carbs but when my old Polo (solex carb) had similar symptoms I cured it by unscrewing the main jet, draining the float chamber and blowing out the main jet with an airline (foot pump ). After that I ran some redex through it whilst revving the car quite hard once it'd warmed up and all was well. Do you have a Haynes manual for it? That should show you how to clean out the carb. I assume the fuel filter is ok, it's not run really low on fuel and picked up cr@p in the bottom of the tank etc etc?

Take the pierburg off and throw it as hard as you possibly can. Either that or clean it as above / replace it with a good known secondhand one if you don't know your way around one. Give it a good servicing and check the ignition components (dizzy, HT leads, etc) as well if it's a while since it's had one, then you know you're off to a good start.
Second hand Webers turn up on the bay a lot. What engine is it?

Oh and camera shops sell cans of compressed air if you haven't got a strong foot pump (football adaptors work well if you have)

It's dropped quite low a couple of times (usually right before pay day!) so that might be it. I'll have a go at giving it a clean once I get my exams done and move back home.

Don't bank on a Weber being the solution to your problem either - I replaced my Pierburg 2E2 with a Weber and I still get a curse word idle occassionally!
Could this be fuel pump related? Does this idle issue appear when it's not cold (weather)?

I suppose it could be a starvation issue, but this would have an effect when driving at revs not just at idle! It could also be the gasket between carb and manifold - if it's dodge then there could be too much air getting in to the mixture..... First port of call as stated above is to check the fuel line / filter and give the carb a clean.
