Sorry if this is a re-hash, but what are everyone's feelings on the re-release of an iconic car in a modern skin and different mechanicals? There is quite a lot of anger between some Classic and BMW mini owners but you don't hear of much for Beetles? What about the alleged new Capri Ford have in the pipe lines? Comments please.

doesn't bother me to be fair. The people who love them for the "shape" are the same people who buy "distressed" look retro T-shirts. And we all know what we think of them

they're pretty much accepted for what they are - the BMW 0.5-series and the Golf-in-a-party-frock.
I do think a lot more classic Beetle owners go on to buy a new Beetle, whether it's because it's a closer design or a better new car i don't know, i've never driven one. It just seems it's being more easily accepted by the classic fans than the Mini One is.
I think they should just be taken at face value without any feelings of 'it's not as good as the original'.... times change!

i'm against it.
i think 90% of the people who own remakes of retro cars think theirs is just as cool as the real thing. how wrong they are...
i think the only reason manufacturers make cars like the new beetle and MINI is because they know they can get away with milking a cool image from the original models. and they do get away with it, unfortunately.

you need only two things in life: WD40 and duck tape. if it moves and it shouldn't use the duck tape, if it doesn't move but should then use the WD40. Genius!

the minis a good car but its not a mini. i don't like it because its using the name to improve sales. its not mini and its not cheap which is what the old mini was.
i don't mind the beetle as much since it seem to have similar character to the original. too expensive though.

I'm all for it as long as it keeps the spirit and intentions of the original car, which I don't feel most do.

I won't go into a rant....there's a lot of this malarcky going on, some work, some don't. These do! fenomenon stratos Fiat 500 Toyota Land Cruiser I see new mini & beetle drivers and often think negative thoughts, but I guess its a more interesting alternative to the usual hatchback.

What people who buy these cars should be doing is buying new fiestas and corsas and modding them properly to get the same effect. Then they might be 'cool' :/

My girlfriend likes new minis and new beetles. She doesnt give a toss about the old ones, she just thinks the new ones look cute. Which, i guess, is the same reason people bought the old ones too.

It's all wrong, if you want the original, buy the friggin original and live with the consequences, that's what its all about. If you want a modern car, buy a modern car, and slowly become one of the big glutinous mass of gray people that have gray jobs, and are just gray.
Just don't buy a new car that's got the same name as a cult icon. It's NOT the same car, you will NOT get kudos, you are NOT Michel Cane.
If you decide not to heed my advise, then please, every time you get in it, realize that you have been conned by a spotty, 20 year old, apprentice reject sittin in an office somewhere, driving a CLK because even he's not stupid enough to buy a "modern cult classic".

If Skoda were to make a new rear engined affordable coupe, I would be a very happy man..and it would be great competition for those little Smart cars.

Totally against it when they share NOTHNG with the original. By all means make a new Beetle, but keep the engine where it should be. By all means make a new Mini, but FFS keep it small. Had a bloke talking to me about his Beetle the other day, kept going on about how it was quirky and fun and totally different to everything else on the road, how glad he was that he got a proper Beetle, how he loved the heritage. I asked him what model it was, he replied... 2003 1.9 TDi. I almost cried

don't ixnay on the grey people dude. Without them you wouldn't shine like the beautiful rainbow that you are ;D hehe ;D Dave, i'm not against cars evolving, ie... etc. It's the way it seems designers nowadays don;t wanna do the work, i mean all the new cars look just the same, or they take an old famous classic car, and sell it on the name alone. It's just wrong.

The 'new capri' concept has been doing the rounds for a few years know, just never seems to materialise. As Ford Europe seem determined to produce as many models as possible from existing chassis's any new capri is likely to be FWD, and thus rejected by the classic Ford lot as many are in the RWD or nothing camp.
What does annoy me is the few TV adverts I've seen showing an owner of a classic Beetle getting finance 'and getting rid of that old banger' with the parting shot being him driving off in a new Beetle - is it just me who's blood boils at this.

theres evolving an then come backs. sometimes it works and we know why, emotional usually. rose tinted and all that too. As i said last time i'd love a new MINI but apart from being a handler and looking a bit like like the oldie its very different. I find the new models very exciting but then sigh that a) i cant afford it, b) even if i could the world and is dog are buying it, and c) its probably not as cool or spirited as you thought. oh and d) its not real its pretending to be something that made its own way to popularity. Like a music cover it should be better, special in its own right, or not bother. for me the MINI and Dodge Challenger tick at least one of those. the beetles just bore me though unless gutted and modded.

anyone that trades in an old beetle for a new one is retarded. fact. i don't really see what all the fuss is about. the new beetle is different to most cars on the road and it does look quite a bit like the old one (bit bigger though i think). sure it may have the engine at the wrong end and may drive totally different but thats just progress i spose. just like its probably safer. i know id rather have an engine in front and the petrol tank behind if i was interested in safety. the new mini does annoy me since its not mini. plus the adverts annoy me no end. any advert that makes a car seem a bit "wacky" and "quirky" is just pure . why is it suddenly an adventure when its in a mini? surely walking would be more adventurous. kiss my grits bmw! i think the new versions are just the same car redisigned with todays style and technology. surely you cant expect them to release the same clanky, leaky, freezing cold (in winter) car we all know and love? they would never make any money that way. not everyone wants the same "charm" as we do.

My Mum has recently bought a new Mini, she wanted a smaller car than her old Scorpio but that retained all the luxuries that she had got used to. She also had very fond memories of her old Minis (proper ones) which helped make her mind up even though she knows the two are ubrelated except in title and styling cues. I think that the re-make versions manage to retain the class-bridging image of the originals, which is a sign of a cult car.
