Whats the deal with transfering reg plates? Say there was, i dunno, a rusted to heck Marina with a private plate near by, the owner wanting £100+ for it. The car itself worth nothing but maybe a resto project or a breaker. I've heard somewhere a car need to be MOT'd and Taxed before you can transfer plates, presumably you can then apply for a new reg number? I'm not up on any of this stuff I'm afraid.

You're suspicions are correct. May even need to have a minimum amount of time left to run?, not just one day's T&T. However, I have heard of cases where a car has been given an extremely dubious MoT just so its plate can be transferred. To quote Datman on something similar recently, "The MoT tester must have been paid in biscuits for his guide dog".

If it has not got a logbook you are also screwed, cos when u apply for one it becomes non transferable
Of course, hypothetically, if you were to buy a clone of a marina and swap the plates over you could mot that
pre 84 it does not need the vin plates for an mot either... check some "tax free" mark one escorts to see this!!
