when the fuzz lost my liscence after they decided they wanted to decorate it further i was told i need to apply for a new one and pay the cost but if they can prove they sent it then they will aslo send you a form to complete to recover the costs from the post office as it will be them who lost it! if they cant prove that they have sent it back to you then i guess they have just lost it and you may have to get another 1 at your cost... just becuase they are rubbish!!! best of luck! i don't know how long it takes to get your wanga back becuase I'm a bit curse word and still havnt applied for my new liscence!! cheers

seems unfair if they lose it and you have to pay. Try speak to a real person there and explain you DEFINITELY put it in the same envelope. No need to be in any way unpleasant, just firm and friendly. I've found the call centre folks can be very cooperative. Its gone up from £19 for a lost V5C then?

Yep, up to £25. Firm and friendly would be the plan anyway, I've worked in a call centre and have been the person that makes it awkward for idiots and goes out of his way for friendly people/people with a sexy accent.
I suppose I've just got to argue my case and the worst they can do is say no.

Do you still have the green "new keepers" slip off the old one? You should be able to tax it with that and then worry about getting another V5 later.

The reference number changes with each revision of the V5, so the old number is no use for taxing purposes. After the horse has bolted etc, but the chap in the local DVLA office once told me years back to never, ever send more than one thing in the same envelope to Swansea. I do as much as I can at the local office when I am in UK now even if its just handing in a form for them to send on to Swansea - saves the cost of a stamp! but the queue can be hellish.

Dunno.....IIRC the biddy has a bar-code scanner to read the form. I would assume this computer is linked to DVLA, so if it scans up the number and the DVLA have a newer document number for that car, it would be "Computer says no". Certainly worth a try, but personally, most of my dealings with tax at a local post office end up with defeat being snatched from the jaws of victory and a long wait for it to be done by post.

Same happened to me, 2 logbooks went out, one came back. If you still have the new keeper slip from the old V5, send that with the form (v62 I think) and you don't have to pay, without the new keeper slip you have to pay £25.
But sent it recorded del!!! Because I sent my new keeper slip and the dvla or the royal fail lost it, so had to do another form and pay the £25 :/
Doesn't matter if you sent them both in one envlope, as you have no proof, just your word! (sucks! Don't it)

Always get a receipt of posting! Too late now though. Then just write a letter to the effect of 'you lost it, gimme a new one'. I've not enough fingers to demonstrate how many times I've had to (successfully) do that. In fact I have two "you must pay us £80 for not SORNing your car" threats here to shout at them about. Lose my SORN forms will you?

I'm going through this at the moment - £80 fine for not SORNing a car I sold ages ago. Fortunately I photocopied the V5 (filled out by new owner) before sending it in and have a proof of posting so hopefully they'll f'off! ;D

Just phone the dvla, tell them the situation. Chances are itll be like my metro one. The received it, started putting it thru the system then took it out for a periodical check or somthing, It then got lost, But because they had it logged on the system as the owner was changed. But not as new logbook sent out, They knew it was their fault. In the most part. Although the DVLA as a whole is a big bag of cock. The actual people working there are human and arnt in it to make loads of money for the dvla in fines and charges. Just don't treat em like an and they wont treat you like one .

Have you not got the tax reminder that comes through the post? If you have that you can tax the car online without a V5 number.

As has been said if you have the new keeper supplement then you don't have to pay for a replacement V5, just send it with the application.
You can try phoning them up, I just read that someone had the same experience and they phoned DVLA who sent them a replacement for free. Worth a try.

As has been said, send in the new green keepers slip....RECORDED/SIGNED FOR and they will send you a new one.
Take a photocopy of it first though just to cover your back if they lose that one too!

Cheers guys. Phone first, post this evening if it doesn't work Paul, that idea would work marvellously except it's currently on a SORN and not due to be renewed for about 9 months

Just called Doovla and the man was polite, friendly and helpful. Took my old details, new details, registrations of both vehicles and said he'd get it marked as urgent and sorted for me. Anyone would think they lose stuff regularly Standard delivery times apply apparently, so up to 3 weeks but will probably arrive quicker. Good stuff
