Ive seen these in the metal before. Supposed to be a reasonable off-roader (no land rover but what is?) And that distinctive nose is quite fetching in a bizarre sort of way. If I remember didnt they have PSA oil burners?

A Fried of mine had one of these.... it was best described as interesting... The engine was a Peugeot diesel, but the electrics were a mix of UMM and Peugeot, and didn't always work. The steeering was terrible, you could turn the wheel 30 degees in either direction whilst driving and it wouldn't react, when it did, it lurched alarmingly... it was either cold, noisy and slow, or hot noisy and slow....
The bodywork looked like is was fashioned from off cuts of metal found on the floor, there wasn't a gentle curve in it, apart fron the wave lines in the big flat panels....
Hilarious fun though, and got a lot of looks!!!

Peugeot oily bits and a body that was made in some guys shed. In the UK they rusted out faster than pretty much anything else on the roads. I remember Parkers Price Guide books had them listed and they were always the cheapest car available - ie under £100 at 8 years old. There are a fair few surviving here in France. Similar to the ARO Trapper, which is also pug powered iirc, Renault mechanicals based on an old Dacia chassis which was a copy of an old Renault chassis, but looks slightly less home made, and the Dacia Duster... A chap who lives nearby has a Duster and you can fit your hand through the panel gaps round the doors. Literally. Although the new Duster is quite a flash looking thing....

Our Frontera is based on an Isuzu Mu, maybe they looked at the rear of one and got inspiration for the UMM?

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

That sounds very much like my experience of a neighbours old Land rover 90 that I used to borrow for towing duties. UMMs are quite popular with Dakar entrants.

Intrigued enough to click the link... Is that REALLY its name?! It's short for União Metalo-Mecânica As for this: Well, they're owned by Renault, who also (effectively) owns Nissan, so there's Nissan guts underneath. And they're coming over here next year, along with the rest of the current Dacia range...

I went out with a lass in the early 80's who's grandad had one. Incredibly agricultural, but awesome off-road. Engines were PSA units, either 2.1 or 2.5-litre Indenor diseasel four-bangers as fitted into 504's at the time (as well as Ford Granadas and LDV 400-series vans). Later models (they were in production until 2004, unbelieveably) had the 2.1 litre XUD11 as fitted to the 605/Citroen XM range.
