hundred quid a panel is 'going rate' thats obv depending on panel, and state its in. a whole car can vary depending on the job you want. i got my silver one sprayed 2 years ago for £300 - it wasnt great, but its only just started to go scabby and it served its purpose of getting it on the road so i could save up for the resto. when i worked at a bodyshop, for a drive in drive out respray we charged about a grand, and that was a pretty nifty job. once again that would depend on price. i also worked at a place that resprayed new cars that got damaged in transit from showrooms and factories etc, and they wanted about £1500 for a full respray, but that was top notch condition. swings and roundabouts really, but you get what you pay for

Its not just the paint is the prep. So one Golf and another Golf may cost different amounts to paint...
But materials to do an average size car will come in about £250 - £300 in decent quality paint now. Labour is usually £40 - £50 per hour in an independant bodyshop. Factor in the costs of VAT...
A place I know to do superb paintwork, I took my Buick up for an estimate a couple of years back and the guy said "look, I can see five grand in that before I even start adding up the smaller bits, am I wasting my time quoting it up?" To which the answer was "yes".
Then a guy I knew a few years back had a car done by one of these backstreet places (he prepped it) and they charged him £400 and the car won concours events, got magazine features and eventually got sold to a museaum for a ridiculous sum.

Its not just the paint is the prep. So one Golf and another Golf may cost different amounts to paint... I agree. When I was pricing up a respray some years ago (can't remember what car it was for) I was told that id I did the prep myself it'd seriously reduce the price of the job. That said, it depends if the bodyshop are comfortable with spraying a car that someone else has prepped - if the paint goes all sh!te because of poor prepping nobody's gonna be too thrilled Before you shell out on getting the boot lid done, do you not fancy having a crack yourself?
