took the capper out this morning, and just my luck she got very warm very quickly, managed 2 limp home making 3 stops to prevent her from getting overly hot. top hose is hot, bottom hose isnt, this I'm assuming means the thermostat is kaput! i need the car tonight, would it do any harm to whip watermount of, take thermostat out, and put mout back on and use it tonight? is it just as simple as it should be? ive replaced one on an a-series before and this was very easy.
comments and advice apprechiated.

It's really harmful to run too-cold engine temps, especially on short runs where the motor never gets up to full temp, and especially in wintah.
Rather than eliminating the stat altogether, drill a couple 3/8" holes through it, so water can pass but not be a gusher free-flow.
The risk is that oil will sludge and gunk up your spray bar, wiping the cam and valve train. Low temp can also do other weird stuff like allowing excessive blowby and consequent coking and bore rattling. And that can prematurely wear the block and cause pinking in the head. It's all very lose-lose.

If you are going to the hassle of removing the stat or drilling holes through it you may aswell replace it.
Cheers,
Stu.
