got the chance of a excellent one,no rust on any arches,77000 miles, spotless interior, etc etc no t+t tho(just out march) only problem i can see is a 4x2 inch hole on drivers side sill, about 4 inches from back wheel is this a mot failure, does it need a new sill or a patch or does it sound not worth the £250 he wants for it cheers mick

if the rest of the cars as clean as you say then its worth it you can either patch it or replace the lot check the cups at the top of the rear springs and the beam behind it they are major problem spots that can be costly to fix

the beam behind it,do you mean the inner sill,or the beam that runs across the car all the underneath looks solid(without the mot testers screwdriver)and is undersealed, the hole is the only thing that concerns meits not jagged or odd shaped, more perfectly rectangular(like the jacking points been removed ??) didn't think to take any photo's but all seemed good like shockers etc engine very clean, just the hole that (maybe)worries me but a patch wouldn't be seen and it is only for a daily not a show car cheers mick

If it is just a hole on rear of sill and patch required then thats fine but as topghia said check rear end were rear coil springs sit into cups. Also check boot floor, front of front inner wings and the ever famous (infamous) battery tray area under the bonnet.
Another 'buyers' trick with any 2 door Escort Mk3/4 (1981 to 1991 era) is to pull the seat belt out all the way and check for dampness of the belt (or even totally wet) of the bit thats never seen (so to speak), if it is wet then the rear side windows have been leaking for a long time and thus the inside of the sills is full of dampness and inturn rust/rot!
