Mine's just got a normal halfords battery in it. Works fine.
PS, it fits in the standard space, and was listed on the computer as the right one for the car. I can't remember how much it was, I got it on trade, but I expect other places will do one that fits anyway. You might need a UK cars number plate though so everywhere you try doesn't run off crying at the idea of finding parts for an import.

the wife had one a couple of years back , and they were around £70 quid then. Just changed it to a standard type that was similar size and output from our local motor factors. Cant remember which one it was but just took the out one down and measured tray area and they sorted me one out at a fraction of the cost.

I don't remember Mazda charging that much for them! isn't it reversed poles as well or something odd about it? Easy enough got if you have a decent factors though.

I stuck an 063 on mine from halfords (£40 trade) which their book claimed fitted, but I had to remake the brackets. Works great though!

Ignore the people on MX5 forums that claim putting a normal battery on the car will cause the entire back end to rot off your car within 3 months. It won't

How could they figure that? Looking forward to having a go again couldn't get much more opposite driving styles than the Shogun ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Did I read someone mention a timing mod on the 1.6 engine the other day? Anyone know anything about that? I think it may need coil packs soon as when it's humid/misty/wet the spark jumps about on the outside of the left pack and it runs missy- I lashed ignition sealant over it which fixed it but obviously not permanent. I called Mazda for a quote on coil packs and they had an import hussy ft and told me it'd be next to impossible to get them! I said it'd be the same as the non import and be was having none of it and actually developed an attitude with me that made me feel like he wasn happy that we went with an import? - bell ends!

Did I read someone mention a timing mod on the 1.6 engine the other day? Anyone know anything about that? When Mazda introduced the 1.8 engine in 1994, it didn't produce a lot more power than the original 1.6, so to differenciate between the two, Mazda detuned the 1.6 by retarding the ignition timing. Re-timing back to the original spec regains about 12-15BHP As yours is a 1992 model, this won't apply though, as the 1.8 wasn't introduced until 1994.

They did more than that! The later 1600s have lower compression ratio thanks to different pistons! Edit: Daveyboy, sent a PM btw. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Wet battery in an MX5?
Depending on how well sealed it is, you'll want to rinse the boot out after trackdays and hooning around backroads - bought mine with a wet one and the runoff makes concrete sizzle. The ones that have all the cells sealed into a 'breather pipe' which you can poke out the bottom of the boot are fine, but the ones where each cell has a cap that just leaks can/will curse word acid all over the boot around corners IME.

Dare I say it, but surely if you've got a battery that's leaking that badly, you've got bigger things to worry about... Nice looking car that. Shame about the dealer being a spanner though.
