they are no worse to work on than any other modern car of the same size. i would chose a fabia over anything french. 1.9sdi should return 50-60mpg mixed driving.

A friend was going to get one of these, but ended up getting a new Fiesta instead. I had a read around for him, and as far as I could tell there were two major problems - the 1.4 8v has a K-series-esque head gasket so check coolant etc, and if aircon is fitted the condensor is easily damaged by stones so check it works.
As said, much better than anything French / Italian. Yaris might be an alternative.

the yaris is a good suggestion, one thing though, if you do look at a yaris make sure that the chassis / vin number starts with JT, this means the car was built in japan and we have a lot less problems with these that the french built models which start with VNK. the only major problems with these cars is that the front anti-roll bar bushes perish, but these are relitivly cheap from a main dealer and are an easy fix.
i for my sins drive a corsa at the moment!(which corner do i stand in ;D) in a 1.0 3 cylinder variant and can, on long runs get nearly 60mpg which must not be grumbled at. and these are also vary easy to work on.
hope that helps robin

I had a shot of a 1.4 8 valve and found it pretty sluggish. However I imagine the 16v with 100bhp would be nippy enough, might be outside your 4K limit though. 8valvers would be within budget.

Look at the Seat Ibiza too. The Polo, Fabia and Ibiza all share the same platform.
I have been looking at the 130 brake diesel Ibiza and it is possible to chip it up to 160 brake and still have good mpg!

we've had 2 fabias now. in 2001 we bought a 1.4 8v brand new. it is the same engine that was used in the rear engined skodas. we never had a problem with the headgasget in the 30k we did in the car. the car is a bit noisy at motorway speed and not overly quick, but it does well. the problem with fabias is poor spec. with the 8v classic (i think thats the one we had) you didnt get a cd player or central locking or electric windows. i think they added more stuff to the spec with the face lifted fabia. corrosion wise, there was only one bit of corrosion i found on our fabia. where the tail gate hinge comes out of the body shell the 'hole' rusts. we had our car for 5 years and we lived about 5 metres from the north sea so that is actually very good going for the car. fabias are easy enough to drive though, my sister used it when she had just passed her test and she loved it. saying that, the a-pillars are quite big and can be restricting. overall i would highly recomend a fabia (but then i would). true enough you could get a seat or a vw but both command a higher price. our 1.4 furb the corrosion i was talking about our new fabia (the way foward!) hope that helped.

We've got a fabia 8v classic. and to be honest, i can't stand it.
Slow, uncomfortable and the rear pillars are a pain in the backside visionwise.
Oh, and service from our local skoda dealer has been beyond a joke.
I couldn't recomend one really.

I'm 6ft 1, and i felt very unwell indeed when forced to sit in the back for a 2 hour motorway journey....
