Hi, For my first car to have and use whilst learning to drive I have got a 1989 Citroen AX coming off of a family friend who is now unable to drive. Just down the road from me there is another AX sat on a drive way, looks fine from the outside apart from faded paint on the bonnet and a flat tyre but what is there to look out for mechanically that may have gone wrong? and if so what sort of money would i be looking at to sort it? Going from the tax disk it has been sat since early 2007. I'm hoping if its alright and the owner's price is right i'll either try and sell it on after a fix up or use some of the more better parts from it on my own one if need be. Any replies and help much appreciated! ;D Dan

They rust. They rust very nicely indeed. Check inner wings, inner arches, front panel, rear panel, around filler, inner and outer sills, basically everywhere! as AHD says, the fact that they run such skinny rubber means the react very badly to cheap stuff. My GT handled beautifully on 155/65 continentals, but 165/65 ditch finders had it understeering and locking up everywhere. Mine when I sold it: and how it looks now:

your Ax will be a mk1 (mk2 was 91/92>96) which means it will have the 'cooler' more retro 'Fisherprice' dash ;D designed with a set square lol But they are becoming rarer than the mk2 as they weren't as well rustproofed i believe, oh and are older! The other Ax you mention maybe a mk2 but if its a pov spec there will be little worth swapping over. If it's a Forte/GT/GT5/GTi then its worth more and will have more parts to upgrade yours. The hub of most if not all things Ax related is the owners club: www.axownersclub.com/well the forum part anyway. Its a fairly small community so it can feel a intimidating with all the banter flying around, but generally speaking everything you'll ever need to know will be found in there! Believe me we've seen it, done it, bought it, or broken it! lol Lifetime membership is only £10 and that gives you detailed write ups on engine conversions, suspension swaps turbo builds etc etc Or you can find some info from here as well (see Ruff's thread and my thread in my previous post) Right enough waffling have some pictures: A Works rally Ax The Holy Grail of Ax's the superproduction, mental 500+bhp Cossie powered RWD wide arch beast in build (has been for the last 3years ) Ax Sport (LHD) with monster Turbo build in progress Ax GT with monster VTR turbo build in progress that should be enough to whet your appetite

Thanks the replies! i did plan on putting some better quality tyres/wheels mainly for looks (they're not the best looking car ever IMO lol) on it but not sure if it is 3 or 4 stud all else i know is its a 1.1 petrol manual.
The one down the road from me has a logo on the side reading spree or something like that i think it was...hopefully its not got a dodgey owner like most of the other cars ive seen and knocked for before!

I've had 3, my 1.0 Dimension was great, no probs till it went through a puddle and died, my 1.1 5 speed ate gearboxes (was on its third when it was scrapped in 12 months) and was rusty virtually everywhere. Also the bodywork is really susceptible to dents, its way too thin! Awesome cars though, really fun to chuck around

you'll be running three stud, only the GTi had 4 stud as standard. The bodywork is thin metal, its what makes them economical, fun and light. The gearboxes only tend to go if the oil is contaminated, the mounts are damaged or the drive shafts are wrong.
