I wonder if this Argenta of mine is ever going to run. 'Just needs a fuel pump to run' was the seller's banter. Not having run for 10 years i decided to do the timing belt too, easy enough. Here's where the problems started. 1) I buggered the engine timing while doing the belt. So I needed to re-time it. But there are no markings on the crank pulley to time it up. 2) So I downloaded the bumf for it off the Autodata site. When i looked at the PDF it described a set-up totally different to mine (for a transverse fiat T/C in fact). 3) Next I bought a Haynes for it off Ebay and waited for that. After 2 weeks it arrived: 'Does not cover injected models' FUGGIN TYPICAL, mine is injected and the pulley markings are different due to the dizzy being in a different place. Now I have to take the super-tight crank pulley off - the toothed wheel for the timing belt has a TDC notch, i can time it up using that, but its not visible while the crank pulley is still on. So I buy a 3/4" breaker bar off Ebay, picked it up from the GF's 2 weeks later. 4) order a 38mm socket from the local tool shop - 'yeah 2 weeks delivery sir' WTF? Still, i've waited 6 weeks, another 2 will make no odds. Tool shop rings up: 'weve got a socket you can borrow til yours arrives', Result. I go and get it, go up to the farm to crack on - The socket is too fuggin fat to go into the recess on the crank pulley. CHRIST ON A BIKE!!!!! I decide to 'estimate' TDC with a screwdriver through the sparkplug hole, I bosh the timing belt on anyway. OK THE TIMING BELT IS ON, more or less. NOW lets have a look at the fuel pump. 1) Ring up the local scrapyards. €100 for a secondhand pump. Fugg that. 2) look on Ebay - crazy money, £40+. 3) find one on German ebay, €15 plus €8 delivery, 2-week delay but I buy it anyway. 4) try to put it on - fuel pipes buggered. 5) replace fuel pipes, and put 2 gallons of juice in the tank. none comes out the tank though, tank outlet blocked. 6) Remove fuel tank to find out what the crack is. turns out fuel tank is 3/4 full of petrol but the bottom 2" of the tank is solid with rusty black crud. 7) spend all morning cleaning out fuel tank. I did this by chiseling out the crud with wooden sticks and bashing the tank with a hammer. Also by putting loads of smashed roof tiles in the tank and shaking it to shift the curse word. manage to shift over 2lb of sludge. Rinse it out lots of times with priceless 98-octane unleaded. Unblock fuel outlet with stiff wire. 8) replace tank and try again. No start - no power to fuel pump. 9) wire a direct live to fuel pump and try again. Still no fuel delivered. Test the 'new' fuel pump by boshing it straight on the battery....................... it does not work!!!!! B4ST4RDS! I shut the garage doors in disgust. They're still shut. I have no pics to illustrate any of this so instead here is a picture of a massive horrible beetle which was living in my garage.

I get lots of old mercs with dodgy injection pumps,I always pull the tank out and either throw it away or put a clean one in,in each case however i use a 5 liter can with a couple of copper tubes soldered in the top.I run a spare pump and just hang it off the front of the car somewhere convenient. This saves destroyning the injectors etc etc with old stuff from the dirty tank. when test running a engine. A good cleaner? Cheap paint thinnners, just mix 300mls to 5 liters of fuel and it will clean out the injectors etc while you run the engine,You can run Pure toluene in the petrol if you can get it. When running a pump, anything will do that can pump 30PSI ,so don't worry too much about trying to find the correct pump,if it pumps OK it'll do!.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Not good mate. Even worse is if someone has been trying to start it in the past with all that crud in all fuel pipes and the injectors will want cleaning and replacing

Bad luck. I'm in the process of replacing fuel pump on the yellow 240K at the moment as it's dead. Hoping for less problems than you, as it has run a couple of times while in my ownership so don't believe that crud etc should be a big problem.
GM models like Senator, Cavalier GSI etc apparently have something similar if I can't find a Datsun one (Bstardchild, you seen my PM?).
Hope that beetle hasn't been munching away on your woodwork.....

Bad luck fella! Sounds like one of my attempts at car maintenance. Usually ending with me making verbal threats at the car before smashing something in a fit of rage and disappearing into the house in a huff.
That beetle is gross!

Usually ending with me making verbal threats at the car before smashing something in a fit of rage and disappearing into the house in a huff. Haha! This is EXACTLY the same strategy as I employ. Step one is thinking... 'right I'll just sort that xxxxxx out' Step 2 - find the tool / socket etc. you need is the only one missing from the set. Go and buy some more. Step 3 - attempt the job, which will inevitably fail as all nuts etc. will round off instantly & you find you lent your grinder to your mate who is on holiday... Step 4 - The missus comes out to say 'are you nearly finished?' (because as we all know it's a five minute job to completely remove, refurbish & refit major swathes of mechanical components )... This is the point at which I usually explode and have to go and sit down somewhere quiet and away from sharp objects for the next few hours......

[/quote] brilliant this is exactly the phase i am enduring.. so far supra timing belt change...1day and counting...how sad. time to dismantle the car and buy somethin else equally as curse word and then start process all over again.

Not good mate. Check the sender unit: It has a 'can' type filter between the pump and the injectors, so i'm hoping the injectors will have been spared a dosing in sh1te? Anyway i'll change that too before attempting any more start-ups. What can be done with a tank full of crud then? Can they be sandblasted inside? I don't fancy my chances of finding another tank for an injected Argenta anywhere. Also has anyone got a S/H bosch injection pump they can sell me? They all seem to be much of a muchness those pumps so any will do that has a 10mm inlet pipe and 8 mm (I think) outlet. The only specific is that it has to at least work.

Getting it cleaned with an acid is probably your best bet. To be honest if the inside of the tanks like that I would have thought the tank must be nearly rusted through, unless they use decent quality steel for the tanks and just use curse word quality for the bodywork.
I forgot to take my spare pump of my maestro before scrapping it so cant help you with that. Other options for you that I know of would be Maestro and montego EFi Sierra injections Carlton, senator and monza injections. Mazda MX5 (not a bosch but same style)
You might be as well rigging it up with a temporary tank to test the engine out though rather than spending a fortune on tank cleaning and possible repair

Hmm, maybe one of thse places could sort it out. They must have some decent tech for cleaning out sh*tty tanks. www.fuel-tank-renu.co.uk/pages/auto.htmlObv getting it back to the UK will be quick and cheap. NOT.
