Well, After noticing a few more type 81's Knocking about on here I thought I would show you mine...
I have always fancied one of these to use as a Daily, but whenever I have been after a car there just wasn't any about... I sold my Golf GTI Cab about 8 months before I happened upon this car, I had a B3 Audi Cabriolet that I just couldnt get on with and an A6 2.8 Quattro Avant, that was an awesome car but very juicy (!) in between but there wasnt any real want to own them...
So, I sold both of these and used my VW T4 Carravelle, again an awesome machine but a bit big for me to commute in, and kept an eye out for something right. I was looking idealy for a MK1 Golf Gti or an Early Mk2 16valve, but these too were proving elusive.
I quite literaly stumbled across this car at Wheels Day in Surrey on Good Friday, it was peeing with rain and everybody was going or had already gone home!! We were having a look around the stalls when I spotted it among a line of American Cars, with a tiny For Sale Sign in the window. At first I thought it was just a normal 80, because of the lack of side decals, it was onlt when I noticed the rear spoiler ant Sport stickers in the side windows that I got excited!!
A quick tap on the window (the owner was just leaving!!) and a chat to him revealed that he was the 2nd owner, it had 68'000 miles, the original unused spare tyre had been put on the front to get it through the MOT(!!!), the toolkit was present and complete as was(and still is ) the Blaupunkt radio Cassette, it ran like a Swiss watch, and was nice and tidy inside!!
A price was agreed, I left him a deposit and picked it up later that evening.
I found out that the missing side stripes is due to it having some paintwork on both sides at some point and they were no longer available new from Audi, so these were left off. I have since replaced the whole exhaust system, its had a new fuel pump( which it didn't need, it turned out to be a blocked pre-filter!!) a full service, the obligatory lowered springs ( I still have the origionals) and a set of 15 inch Castellets from my Golf.
The mileage is now on 77'000 and it gets used every day and I rekon I get high 30's to the gallon too, just like me old Golf!
It has a few minor paint issues that will get sorted in the New Year when the weather Breaks, bit of a scab on the A pillar, both back doors are slightly off colour and the Back arches have minor bubbling, but I am very critical!!!
Oh, theres also a scuff on the front bumper....
So there you have it, my daily, have a couple of pictures I took outside Work in September!!
