Fed up with scanning Auto Trader and Gumtree for another rancid old snotter....the more I think about it, the more I'm thinking 'sod it, I want something a bit nicer'. Just about to have a decent payrise at work, so fuel consumption's not quite the issue it was....and although I've had 3 360's in the past I've never owned a big Swede.....and they don't come much bigger than a 9-series. ;D Seen a really nice one for sale. '92 940 2.0 Wentworth manual which I believe is the old B200 redblock with turbo. One owner, 94k, FSH. Guy wants £495 for it with a year's ticket. 155bhp of RWD wafty loveliness. I hope. Not this one...but virtually identical (and virtually as tidy, too). Anyone with any first-hand experience of these beasties? What are they like to live with? I'm 46, and drive cars like I drive HGV's (my day job). Slowly. Already got an insurance quote (they're Grp16)....£227 Fully Comp. I like being old..... A favourable response means a roadtrip up to Wigan sometime next week......

My sorted my old man out with a 940 with a 2.3 lump which looked very similar to the silver one posted above. Went well, good and solid - last of the "proper" Volvos I reckon. Very wallowy suspension just like the 240 / 740 but then nobody buys a big Volvo and expects anything else! They're very capable cars and I can't think of any "achilles heels" that they have apart from the usual rust that any car of a certain age gets. I'd say the only reason not to go for one would be down to personal preferences on how you like a car to drive. If it's been looked after and big, wafty, solid, boxy saloons are your thang then you can't go wrong!

I really like them, much better built than the small Volvos IMO, saloons seem to go for such little money considering how much car you get for the money and the quality of the build too. Parts aren't too horrific either. The ride is MEGA floaty probably the softest I've ever experienced.
I keep meaning to buy a 940 Turbo, but something else always turns up before I find one!

In town runnabout? perhaps not, tbh, but on anything like a longer journey, very little comes close for comfort and waftability for the money. Pretty much bomb-proof, its old enough to not be over-complicated by too much electronic nonsense without compromising efficiency or comfort. The interiors are like being at your grans house, minus the smell of wee and a disapproving kitty. Add doilies to the headrests to complete the feeling.

It would be used for commuting to work, but out of the 18 miles I have to travel 14 of them are motorway miles....so it wouldn't be slogging it out in heavy traffic all that much. Provided I could get 25mpg out of it doing that, then it wouldn't really be much of an issue. Even when I'm on the motorway you won't find me above 65-70 that often. Think I'll give the guy a ring on Tuesday and have a wazz up the M6 for a shufty. Cheers guys!

I had a 2.3 turbo 940, I loved it. 150k on the clock and didn't miss a beat (my 740 has 179k and my 960 has 184k, both fly through MOT tests still) I took my 940 estate to the nurburgring and back, got some great looks going round the ring with passenger and car full of camping gear. I drove at 55mph all the way there and back and managed 38mpg

Fantastic cars. My old man bought a 2.3 low pressure turbo estate for towing his massive trailer for a year. It was faultless, luxurious and did good MPG on long runs. He had a 740 estate for years before that too. I used to love driving them The 740 had done astronomical miles 400.000+ but still drove nice and tight and was totally rust free when he sold it. He sold the 940 on for a profit after he had done with it. He is all posh now and drives a fully loaded V70 D5 SE LUX but still talks about the 740 and 940 fondly with a gleam in his eye ;D

I had a 960 3.0 24v straight 6 estate, superb car had every toy and oodles of grunt comfy as hell, handled well, huge inside, good on juice for a big old wafter as well, i'm not a fan of small turbo lumps when you can get a lovely big n/a tourqe monster instead I drive the ar$e of everything, never been known to cruise at anything even remotely legal speedwise, plus round the doors I boot it all the time using kickdown at most pullaways/junctions/traffic lights and it still managaed low/mid 20's mpg average, my mrs who is a whole lot more restrained with her right foot (though she still cruises at 90+ and like to overtake) and got an average 29/30mpg on her commute with it, so I guess you'd be more than happy mpg wise if you're a gentle driver. Wish I still had it

Volvos seem remarkably rust resistant. A girl I know has a G reg 740 and it's not really rusting yet.
I would go for a wagon if I was buying a car that size (then you can justify it as a practical vehicle) but Its one of the cars I was considering recently, I borrowed an early V70, which wasn't bad, apart from unable to read the OBDII codes, and actually went for a late model V70 D5 in the end. Volvo seem to put good standard stereo systems in their cars. The one in mine is really good.

I'm probably telling you stuff you already know, but the 940 has different rear suspension to the 960. IIRC the '40 is an extension of the 700 design, which IIRC was itself based on the 200 (which in-turn went back to the 100), so quite an old design!
The '60 had IRS, but I don't knows any more details as I've never owned or even driven a 900.

I've got a 740 wagon and even though it's got a live rear axle, it doesn't clonk over bumps. Once you adapt your driving style to what the car wants, it's brilliant.
Mine's got a 4 speed with overdrive, later ones have real 5 speed boxes. The only thing to watch out for is water leaks and electrics (particularly dash gauges) working properly.

Mate of mine goes through them like hot dinners, and they've never been great MPG-wise. 25MPG when he was playing the economy-game - much less when used hard. He's in a diesel 440 at the minute, and that is good, but obviosuly not as fast or enjoyable as the other 2 or 3 or whatever many he has this week.
