Right, basically I have just had a V5C back for a new (to me) car, instead of being blue it is red and says "THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERHIP. It shows who is responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle." across the top. Does this mean summat dodgy is going on, or are they all like this now? I will leave these here as a little token gesture. Thanks

AFAIK they're all like this now. And even the old light blue V5's had 'The Registered Keeper is not necessarily the legal owner' printed in bold type on them.

ao how do u prove ownwe ship if u don't have a receit ? Without a reciept you can't. The V5C alone doesn't prove ownership. In fact it never did. All it has ever proved is who the registered keeper is.

All it has ever proved is who the registered keeper is. which is why you should always get a written reciept. which I seldom think to do but even a reciept is no actual proof unless its been independantly witnessed, apparently.

Good point. I often wondered how something scrawled in pencil on the back of an envelope could be legally binding.....

They have just made that fact clearer on the new V5C.

The system used in some (all?) US states makes more sense. There you have a title to the car not a registration document. The title proves ownership. However buying and selling a car is like buying and selling a house and has to be done with paperwork signed and stamped and all by a Notary Public (like a low rent solicitor). If we tried to bring that in here we'd have all the usual suspects up in arms about it being nanny state and an invasion of privacy and a stealth tax and all the fault of the illegal imigrants and so forth. So its easier for the DVLA to point out the legality on the document, they always have done but some people still don't get it hense it being in huge letters on the document now.

On a similar line to this.
I got my logbook today for a car ive just bought, however it wont let me sorn it saying "Unfortunately, because of the tax class of the vehicle or recent changes to the vehicle record, you are currently unable to apply for a tax disc or declare SORN using this service.
You will need to apply for the tax disc or declare SORN at a licence-issuing Post Office® or DVLA Local Office (as applicable for the vehicle) using the reminder (Vehicle Licence Application/SORN Declaration) or the Registration Document/Certificate together with the Insurance Certificate or Cover Note, MOT Test Certificate/GVT Test Certificate (if applicable) and fee."
Its 1965 but not classed as historic yet could that be the reason?

I would say so, but as it's a new V5 I would have thought they would have picked up the Historic thing. Go to the PO, pay for the tax and wait for a refund...... I have ehard of this happening.
