Hi, I have a newbie question.... I currently run one car which I want to take off the road for a few weeks for some tidying and was thinking of getting some 'autoshite' for the daily slog. Does anyone have any tips about insuring more than one car? What's the best way of going about this? What about you guys with several cars, how do you insure a fleet? Any advice gratefully received!

Hi, Good question. I have been around the houses with this one. I think i got it wrong cos you can insure fleets. I have my daily insured normally with a decent priced standard insurance policy. Now i'm gonna pay slightly less on top to insure my sportier +15 yr old classic as a second car with roadsure.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Admiral do multi-car policies to include moderns, but they aren't that cheap.
I'm with Footman James and insure all mine on one policy but its only for cars over 30 years old so anything youngfer than that I need another policy. So my daily is 41 years old LOL.

Ask them nicely, they might add an additional temporary vehicle to your existing policy for a small amount.
Or transfer policy onto the stopgap car and back again? Leaves your current one uninsured during works, would that be a problem?
Or, buy a temporary car that's old enough for a separate classic policy? My 'classics' cost about £100 a year each, and each one can do 5000 miles.

RH Specialist Insurance, based in Brentwood. Starlet, Skyline, whatever, all cost about the same £100-ish each with agreed value and breakdown cover. Fortunately never had to claim so can't say what they're like then, but minor admin stuff has always been OK. Remember I live in rural Norfolk, maybe different where you are. Also don't know what they're like with mod's.

Yeah thats the prob with mine, all different, one 'new' (1991)!, one modded with insurance turn off, non factory V8! and one with a sporty badge that not everyone agrees is a classic yet. I'll try harder next year when theres more than 1 road worthy. for now i'm happy with the 1+1 set up.

Thanks for the info so far.... I think i'll try and get temporary cover for a month or two, I don't think a K plate Rover 416 is quite a classic yet However, eventually I would like to run a couple of cars on more of a permanent basis...is a 'classic' for insurance purposes anything over 20 years old?

Hey Dude, the Prelude looks good! I'd try for a temporary additional vehicle, most insurers will do it but they tend not to advertise it. Plus you'll often pay an admin fee for any change - I know CIS charge £12.50 for picking the damn phone up! Sometimes you can talk them out of charging the fee. The Admiral multi-car policy is actually really, really cheap for me (provided the paperwork checks out I'll be getting some of that in the next couple of weeks). Admittedly that's on two modified cars (of 1988 and 1991 vintage), I do low miles and I'm in low-risk Suffolk (not quite so low risk on the estate I live on, but there you go). BUT they won't cover cars over 25 years old on that.

Yes, it has four wheel steer. It really is in great condition only having done 60k miles, just got to tidy up the bumpers a bit. When I've sorted it I'll put it in the readers rides section, with plenty of photos. It's staying standard though A couple more pics for now, (taken a few months ago, hence the winter sun).....
