This may seem a silly question but...
How does one go about using the font? I now have a file on my desktop, but how do I add it to the font list in, say, word?

Charles Wright is the font used on number plates pre 2001. I would like to find a site that did that too!

Open the file and copy the main file within it (sometimes there might be a 'notepad' file...but ignore this)
Paste the file onto your desktop and it should show as a 'TT' icon (meaning true-type font). Now copy the file again and click the 'start' icon. Now click control panel and find the folder/icon called 'Fonts'
Open the 'Fonts' folder and paste the TT file into there. It should install very quickly, then it'll apprear in all future font lists in whichever document you are using (Word, Publisher, Photoshop etc...)
Sounds confusing but is actually really simple once you've done it.
I always save files to a specific folder rather than my desktop and open/copy/paste them within the folder itself to keep the desktop clean. I have a folder specifically for downloads and even a 'temporary' folder for fonts within that. Once I've installed a font I then delete if from the temporary folder because it's not needed anymore once you've installed it.

Charles Wright isn't free, but there's a couple that are clones that are.
Windows installs fonts in c:\windows\fonts, just right click and 'install'.
I have a totally clean desktop as well, just the recycle bin, everything has to be organised on my hard drive as well!

Thank you very much MM!
Installed and ready to use.
As for my desktop, this is my works laptop - and it's in a right mess. I never get 5 mins to clean it up. I'm a lot more disciplined with the Mac at home...

On this site alone there are 1000s, too many to look through and find it by sight.

Hi Fred, If you have one of the older versions of Windows (XP for example....what I am using) try to download it again. Don't actually download it, but click the download button on the DaFont website then in the grey box that appears, have a look for the file path of where it'll be saved. Usually starting C: If you have one of the more 'new fangled' versions of Windows then it might automatically dump it in one of the pre-made folders in your 'My Documents' section. There is usually a folder called Downloads and another called Documents. Check those places for a file called UK_Number_Plate Alternatively, click start and use the search function to scan your hard drive for the file. Again, use UK_Number_Plate for the search. I'm sure there are lots of people who know much better/quicker ways to do this but I'm useless at computers and always seem to take the long way around. I usually get there in the end though

This is how I install fonts using vista, maybe not helpfull to all but might be handy for some (you might want to pause it to keep up video lags and jumps in a couple of places) screenjel.ly/75BmbXVHp88i'll try a direct insertion but I don't think the forum will let me. <object width='577' height='403' data='http://embed.screenjelly.com/swf/SJPlayer.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' codebase='http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,115,0'><param name='movie' value='http://embed.screenjelly.com/swf/SJPlayer.swf'/><param name='allowScriptAccess' value='always'/><param name='allowFullScreen' value='true' /><param name='flashvars' value='video=75BmbXVHp88'/></object>
