That MP sounds like he needs a hefty kick in the nads. I read that reply and had a mental image of him sitting in the library of a country manner wearing a smoking jacket, with a big cigar and glass of whisky in his hand, chucking at what us proles have put up with, before he summons the chauffer to fetch the Bentley for a run to the local pub for lunch. Hate to be the one to blow my own horn but...... this is all spookily like what I said in my earlier posts.

Germany: 30 years, very cheap road tax, simplified technical control but your vehicle must be »original«. You must own another vehicle which is fully taxed Just for information, it´s a little bit more complicated than that Ace In Germany you have a choice how to register your 30 year old car. If you let it run as a normal car, you pay full road tax, (which will be very expensive as you probably won´t have any emmision reducing systems) and you´re not allowed into a lot of major cities for the same reason. The MOT is every two years and is as stringent as with any other car. If you want it to run as a "Historical vehicle" you need an engineers report which checks that everything is original, you then get reduced road tax (191 Euros) and can drive in any city you want as historic vehicles are allowed in. You´re not allowed to drive them everyday to work and the MOT is the same as for a "normal" car and needs to be done every two years. The insurance companies will require you to have a daily driver if you want reduced rates - these normally include a reduced mileage policy too. I´ll give you an example of what a difference that can make in real terms. My son has moved to Hannover and they have an enviromental zone in place which only lets in certain vehicles depending on their emission output) His 1978 W123 Mercedes 300 Diesel would cost over 1150 Euros roadtax and wouldn´t be allowed in- which if you´re a visitor is not too much a problem but if you live there........ Registering his car as a historical vehicle means that not only can he legally drive it in Hannover - it only cost 191 Euros road tax This is for the same car - just registered different, needless to say the amount of cars getting registered as an historical vehicle have shot up in the last 12 months and it´s probably only a matter of time before the 30 year rolling limit gets stopped.

1150 euros (£1000) is a little steep assuming that's the annual fee. Just how much (or little) deviation from 'original' will the engineer tolerate before he refuses to issue a report claiming 'classic' status?

The upside of the German system is that if you were to re- engine the vehicle with a modern unit you would then be within the emissions limits and could presumably tax it as a standard car paying the standard rate and not be penalised for any other mods (brakes, suspension etc) you had made to the car?

Diesel, non cat, 300cm³ 1163 Euros per year and you´re allowed very little deviation from original - my Capri didn´t get through a couple of years ago because i was running a non cast iron exhaust manifold it depends on what mood the tester is in i suppose or how well you know him

If you want it to run as a "Historical vehicle" you need an engineers report which checks that everything is original, you then get reduced road tax (191 Euros) and can drive in any city you want as historic vehicles are allowed in. Original in this case means with contemporary modifications or modified with period accesories! It must not be like it left the factory - but you have to proof that tuning bits etc. are period or that the car had been modified in "it's time" (max 10 years after it's first registration!). Old photos or advertisments will do. Historic plates are no death to modifications. Also modifications that enhance security of emissions are allowed (like cat converters or disc brake conversions). [edit] Yes, it can depend on the tester, as they have a certain level of freedom in theyr decision - they may make use of it or not. Some cars with smal engines are more expensive with H plates, as the 191€ historic tax is fixed... You´re not allowed to drive them everyday to work and the MOT is the same as for a "normal" car and needs to be done every two years. The insurance companies will require you to have a daily driver if you want reduced rates - these normally include a reduced mileage policy too. With "H-Kennzeichen" (historic plates) you ARE allowed to drive it daily! It's just the red 06 and 07 plates that are for test drives or drives to oldtimer meets only. On H plates you can drive as much as you want without any restriction at all

Here an idea........
If we manage to get a protest going in London, what about parking something like a Morris Minor convertible next to a modern 4x4 (or merc s-class, bmw 750), and make a point to the public that the quintessential english minor (or e-type, herald, db6) is going to be regulated, but the more poluting modern 5/6/7 litre will not be regulated.

Exactly what this thread is about IMO as what goes on in other "big" EU states will surely also be looked at and compared with.

Is it worth trying to get some celebs in on the act, as it might get the public listening if someone like Richard Hammond was helping us

Well if Germany has no legal, government enforced mileage limits (only insurance policy ones) what are we all worrying about? It's already been said Germany is seen as the gold standard, one to aspire to (as far a Historic vehicles and the environment goes) and by the sound of it I would cheerfully follow their lead. I don't mind paying something, like the Republic of Ireland, if it paid for the admin.

Hence the me emailing and getting a reply from Chris Barrie.. As for Getting hammond in on the act, Not sure on how easy that would be, As for the best part the topgear crew seem to be hard to get hold of on a personal basis.... Unless you have deep pockets and wanna buy the info.
