You've warned him so there's no much else you can do. When I sold my BMW I told the guy that it was dubious and when he turned up from the lake district without a trailer I did face palm. Sure enough (and true to form for that heap) it wouldn't start then the bonnet cable disconnected itself, then it started to blow fumes into the cabin (something it'd never done before). I was going somewhere but felt I couldn't leave them outside the house so helped get the bonnet up and get it running. The guy got it home okay and left me positive feed back so given I sold it cheap he probably expected some kind of trouble from it.

had a clear out a few years ago. 1300 spitfire ran well but looked awful, had been under a tree for a year. German guy with no english speaky came over with his mate in a stripped out transit minibus and a trailer. paid cash. put the spitfire on the trailer. turned the trailer round and drove the spit into the back of the tranny! climbed out the back window of the spit, hooked up the trailer and went off to pickup another car in the same week my beloved e23 735sei went to a Norwegian guy(for curse word all ) he and his mate flew into Stansted, i picked them up, sorted the paperwork in the pub next door and they left to get a trailer they had bought halfway across the country, then on to get another vehicle. no worries from either

Whether its sensible or not remains to be seen. But a roadtrip from UK to Austria in a Mustang sounds full of win!

Amazo - who's head is it hanging over? A little of Column A, a little of Column B. ;D OK, so most ancient myths, legends and fables don't quite hold up to intense scrutiny...

also while i think about it my brother sold his banana yellow, x packed, multilink mustang axled, 5.7l chevied capri to a scottish guy and his dad. they flew, in paid with the monopoly money they use for banknotes up there, and set off into the sunset in the car - which in the past 2 years had only moved for mots . did ok until 30 miles from home when snow set in afaik he got home after 23 hours and an extra ÂŁ80 of fuel in the last 30mile stretch* * may be lightly fictionalized - a lot of beer has been passed since then ;D

yeah I wouldnt worry, you were perfectly honest about the potential for problems, even if you weren't it's a 40 year old completely unknown (to him) american car, there is a huge element of risk involved anyway..
I recently sold a mk2 golf Gti that had sat in my yard for a year (ish) I made this clear to the buyer on the ad and the phone after the sale, he seems ok and asks me to collect him from the train station, which I did a few day later..
First question I ask him, good trip? have you come far? yeah he says Cumbria.. (i'm near Reading) its 7.30 at night pitch black, snow and hard frost everywhere and after a few cups of tea a chat and mince pie or two off he goes happy as Larry with his new car...
cue my crossed fingers all damn night
get a text around midnight,"car went great though heater stopped working after 2 hrs"! apparently some funny little bypass valves VW fitted after a big lawsuit when a heater matrix burst over some woman legs had failed in the 'shut' position easy fix just not on the motorway in the middle of the night, phoned me today and he loves the car dead chuffed with it...
It's all a risk if you are up to the challenge you have to take the rough with the smooth, the only problem comes when stuff is misrepresented, you haven't done that so don't fret!

i sold my Saab convertible to a German who flew into Liverpool. Realised the A pillar rust was a little heavier than he realised, even though the photos were good. Negotiated a little off, he had never driven rhd, terrified himself and his girlfriend while arriving at the guest house we had arranged for him for the night.
His english was good, but his plan was, spending a week doing Warrington, through wales, across england, and then back to germany.
Never heard from him again.

If you are going that way with a trailer... Afraid not. I'm going in an Alfa Romeo, so if there's a trailer involved they're usually on it... It does seem annoyingly convenient though To be honest a large dose of blind faith helps in these situations, as a veteran of a few cross country/continent collections I've never been bitten that badly I wouldn't do it again

i'd do that all the time, actually i am thinking about getting a car from the UK next year .... cars in the UK are a lot cheaper than in germany , downside on more modern cars is being RHD , on classic cars it is cool to have them in RHD... friend of me came over and picked up an 86 Passat, just to have a RHD in his collection. The previous owner certainly is still standing in front of his garage, shaking his head ;D btw, if he is from Austria, please send him through London, so that he has to pay the congestion charge. That's what they do when we come over to Austria , and if you don't buy the sticker, they rape your a** ..... ;D

I have done this quite a few times - fly from Toulouse to somewhere in UK, then spend a few hours messing with trains and busses to get to the seller, buy a car I have only a few lines of text and some cameraphone pics of for a description and totter back home again via Dover. Nothing has gone drastically wrong yet, and aside from the odd minor detail, the cars have all been as described.

No doubt about it, the guy's a mad man. But then he certainly doesn't sound like a fool... So matter of fact means he's done it plenty of times and he'll be well prepared.
I saw the ad. Was a good, comprehensive and, most important, honest description. I wouldn't worry, 'Cos the buyer certainly isn't!

I need it to go without too much of a hitch as I need the cash from this one to pay for the next one I already won the auction for! Due to pick that up Monday or Tuesday next week.

Itll be fine...
Its only 1100 miles from notts to vienna.
Its supprising how quickly you can rack that milage up just going down the shops and back and forth to work.
On another note. My grandad sold his old morris oxford woodie a few years back, to some guy in southern france. The guy flew here, drove it home. Then it got sold on again and driven to ireland where it lives now... Thats alot of miles on a B series with a 4 speed and column change.. And its still fine.

My thoughts exactly! Importing a RHD classic makes perfect sense, but how cheap does a Saab convertible have to be to justify such a move? after all RHD is the reason why used cars are so cheap in the UK... (Edit: obvisous above statement is obvious. and somehow redundant. sorry)

Usually a professor or someone who stayed far too long at uni buys such a car, the only reason might be the letter box on the right side of the house ...

well, Saab is something totally different over here, as you might now. Usually a professor or someone who stayed far too long at uni buys such a car, the only reason might be the letter box on the right side of the house ... That made me laugh. ;D Not quite the same but I sold a PS1 with a few games on Fleabay a few years back & the buyer was from Poland. I thought I'd end up having to get postage prices etc for him but he messaged me saying he was coming to the UK to collect some cars and would be local to me so would pick it up then. 2 days later (as promised) a minbus pulls up with Polish plates on it with about a dozen berly Polish lads in, he paid in cash & was happy......I even gave him directions from my house to Luton as he was picking up a car from there to take back to Poland. I guess the trip can be worthwhile after all, although I'd think twice about leaving the country to buy a motor and drive it home. ;D

A mate of mine sold a 69 impala on eBay recently, big block 409, not registered just used it for drag racing......2 blokes from Germany turned up with a briefcase full of cash and a pair of plates, asked which way was dover and were off. On open headers and slicks all the way from north London to Germany, nutters!
