thought id start a thread on my latest build its a 1971 mk1 escort that I got for my girlfriend as her first car, yes I know they are worth 20 bazillion quid but its her first car, she loves him and ogy aint for sale no matter what . its not gonna be another RS replica or rally car rep thats not our style, a bit of smoothing, nice rims n engine combo, nice lick of paint and were will be almost there! okay bit of history 10 years ago Katie aka minkytastic wanted either an oval windowed bug or a mk1 escort as her first car. ovals were silly money at the time and escorts were few and far between. I was driving to katies one night and saw a landrover on a drive and a bit of chrome behind it.... thought id investigate. well the drive led to a little forlorn mk1 escort "OGY" it was owned by a vicar and was on his parish driveway! I knocked on the door and asked about it, turns out it was used by him and his daughter but had been involved with a landys front bumper which bent the front panel and bumper. it was a 1.1 base model and I thought it would be an ideal car for katie. I agreed a price and drove it home the same evening! Katie was a little shocked to say the least, we had just bought a one owner car from a vicar and even had a box full of bibles in the boot! ;D bit of welding, electrics etc and OGY was mot'd. katie used him for a few years and he was upgraded as we went along ....mk3 capri front struts with discs, rs 4 spokes, welding, new interior, welding, sort dodgy electrics, welding...you know how it goes. then katie took on our 71 beetle ragtop as a daily and OGY went in a lock up...well that was 6 years ago so I thought id better get started I dragged him out, pumped up the tyres and got him lowloaded home! ahhh daylight...it burnssss! ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/ogydaylight.jpg) piggy back home ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/piggyback.jpg)

![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/outdaback.jpg) well i had a tinker and got him running again, didnt need much but the fuel lines were perished so i jerry rigged a glass jar or fuel and katie drove him up n down the alley before we started stripping him out interior n glass out, wings n doors off and lets make a parts list ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/strippingoff.jpg) oh dear...too many years of mot bodges, water leaks and the old filler, newspaper n fibreglass routine means OGYs a bit worse for wear. luckily i had a pair of good doors put aside and a brand new pair of wings and front panel which i donated to the cause we also needed 2 complete floorpans, strut tops sills, arches etc etc etc ordered the panels, got the grinder out and made a start! plan is to get the front end nice and solid and work my way back nice ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/strutawayps.jpg) ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/rothingearea-1.jpg) ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/rotinstrut-1.jpg)

![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/rottenpscorner.jpg) pain in the backside! cut it out and sort it, these top corners were a bit complicated but making it in a few sections helped ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/hingerepair.jpg) strut top need some grindygrindy weldyweldy loving too ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/struttopps.jpg)

![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/struttopweldedps.jpg) ended up buying the whole strut top area panel. a bit of a pain to fit as I had no real datum points but it all worked out in the end. nightmare of a job but so much better in the end once that was done I could finish up the hinge area ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/hingeareaps.jpg) first escort ive done so it a learning curve working out what goes under or over etc. other side is just as bad but atleast I understand the front end now! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

spent a whole day with the gas gun and a scraper taking the old underseal off, that was fun (NOT) but at least we can see what needs work bumper mount area needs attention ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/psbumpermount.jpg) cut it out, rebuilt the inner sections and cut a repair patch. weld thru primer is great for this kind of thing ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/psbumperrepair.jpg)

needed a bit of room to work so i pulled the engine out with help from my neighbour, its now got a 1600 so fairly heavy lump to lift out with just a scaffold tube and some rope. sadly we must of caught the oil filter as the next morning it was like exxon valdeas in my garage...oil everywhere ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png) yay for cat litter! anyhoo heater bulge removed and its a bit rotten under there ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/heaterrot.jpg) we always had a water leak in OGY but it didnt realise the front was as crispy as it is, cut it out, fab a new piece (or 6)and weld it up.... sounds so easy when you say it quickly! ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/heaterrotdone.jpg)

I was looking at this tread yesterday as my Grandad had an identical Mk 1 Escort which was a 1972 model, same colour. I'd love one but funds don't permit. But, when out Crimbo shopping today I saw this and had to buy it ;D ![](http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a133/kerrywh2001/imagemagicphp.jpg) Closest I'll come to owning a car as cool as yours at the moment - keep us updated with pics - so nice to see an Escort not going down the replica Mexico / RS route ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

Currently driving a Renault Wind Gordini as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

cheers guys colour on ogy well...originally we were going black with a red interior but the katie realised she already has a black car with a red interior now she is thinking along the lines of a bluey grey...but that may change...women aye! ;D the estate is a bit dead. a women cut me up, overtook at speed, cut in front of me because of a speed camera and braked heavily. result I took out her car, an escort van in front of her and bent my estate. woke up in the passenger footwell with a steering column wrapped round me. was very lucky to walk away from that one. totally gutted about damaging that car ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) Stu the escort will hopefully be as good as the bay. don't want to go too perfect with it as ill end up being uber paranoid about using it! disasterbus, cool model kit ;D to be honest if we hadnt bought OGY a long time ago we wouldnt buy one now. they are cool cars but like vw campers they are getting way overpriced. if I hadnt bought my bay a few years back I wouldnt be able to afford that now either

couple more updates started to poke the other side and its a bit rough... here we go again! ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/dsstruttop.jpg) best not to faff about, cut it out and start again ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/frontdsoff.jpg) managed to save the strut top rather than replace, used a proper heavy gauge steel ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/dsstrutrepair.jpg)

had to removethe lower front crossmember as the d/s chassis leg had taken a bit of a beating from the rust worm! ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/dsfrontchassis.jpg) plated it again, this is double skinned but all the metal I'm putting back has is sprayed with weld thru primer. ive also used jenolite and then metal primer inside the leg to help it last ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/dschassiscut.jpg) job done ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/chassisdone.jpg)

bumper mount was a bit fubared on this side you can see some "crinkling" from a previous accident. this metals strong enough to panelbeat out and re-use rather than cut it out ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/dsbumpermount.jpg) cut it out, treat it and repair ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/dsbumperrepair.jpg) another loverly repair panel ready to go on! ![](http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/slammedkustom/ogyogyogy/dsbumperrepsection.jpg)
