I was sad about the rotary too, but this is exciting I remember asking if the little Mazda V6 would be any good for a RWD car in a MX3 thread, and the answer was that it's not designed to be placed longitudinally. I have a feeling it won't be a problem for you though!

I like the plans - improving usability's always good.
The older MX5 engines aren't a good choice for economy - the CR's too low for it use fuel efficiently. That makes them easy to boost, but I doubt you'd get a great improvement in economy.
The more recent MX5s are supposed to be a lot more economical - and more powerful as stock - but clearly don't take boost as well.
If you were in the UK, with a ready supply of donors, I'd be tempted to suggest the 1.8 VVC k-series: nice and light, compact, revs nicely, 146 or 160bhp and reasonably economical. Probably not the best motor choice in NZ though.
I really do like the idea of the little Mazda V6 though. ;D

A lady with pretty top skills in England is making an adaptor kit fit the mx5 box to the klv6. But the sound of the v6 along with the cool look and originality (in a viva at least) would be so cool. It looks like the 2L v6 would be the cheapest to run. Especially if I went with an aftermarket Ecu and tuned it well. Decisions, decisions....

Doing Some digging- v6 is a touch thirsty.. Well at least the 2.5 is. Damn.

How much boost could I run on a stock 1.8 or 1.6 with the stock Ecu still controlling it? 5 psi? I will want to continue running stock Ecu to start with as it's (always) a budget car. Can upgrade later. I figure low boost from a little turbo will give just that bit extra low down urge. Mark - you must be driving your car hard to only ever see mid 20's mpg? Have a look at flying Miata and the link below. There's a heap of 1600 & 1800 MX5 performance info if you haven't found this already- 8 psi boost will get you 160hp at the wheels with the stock 1.6 engine. You can use stock injectors but need to extend the opening times. Flying Miata do a "Voodoo box" which extends opening times but just works when on boost so cruise economy is still good. cheers- yep I had found that sight last week when doing much research I also found another good one but will have to find it again- lots of good info. So I left work early today and went to wreckers to measure up V6... ... showing the horrible ugly inlet manifold. I would not be using this- I have some good ideas floating about in my head on how to make a neat plenum setup. For other people who might be interested in these engines- here are the measurements I took. Its very compact for a V6. looks good to fit. plus the one they have there is a manual. But its only the 1.8 which although sweet revving in only about 130bhp. So far I have found mixed reviews about fuel economy. I even spoke to a customer who arrived today in his ford probe- same 2.5L engine. He gave me vauge ideas on fuel economy.. "oh I put in $50 of gas and get to blenheim and back with some left over".. I shall continue researching.... My question today is; I I go down the mx5 engine and lightly turbo charge it can I have my cake and eat it too? Ie can it be fast when I want and cheap if just cruising? I figure the answer is yes - if I go with aftermarket ECU. I figure that I would be creating my own take on what is the common modern small passenger engines that all the manufacturers are putting out today- pretty bloody nippy whilst still sipping away at juice.

If you go down the piggy back ECU or aftermarket ECU route (as opposed to the bodge it with a rrfpr route) with the mx5 engine then yes as long as you stay off boost it should be no less economical than the standard mx5 engine. Then when you stamp on the throttle you'll get the power, as you say, have cake and eat it. The downside is while its all very practical and efficient it's not exactly overflowing with character, which is why I took the 1.6 turbo with 230hp out of my mx5 and put the 160hp rotary in!
Get on miataturbo.net, they can be a little harsh and american and likely to flame people but there's no better resource for mx5 turbo information on the net and they have a dedicated megasquirt section too thats worth reading.

I'm a kiwi(with mainly pommy blood) ill just flame them back with such cunning wit that they won't know what to say. Anyway- I drive an old viva so I'm instantly cooler! ;D

looking at getting a kitten today. And maybe another tomorrow- the second kitten happens to be in the same town that the cheap $100 v6 is in...

How much mpg are you looking for from your new engine? Do you have any idea how much the original Viva lump weighed?
If you're gonna drop a V6 in, why not look at a Toyota V8? Its light, compact and the mpg wouldnt be much different, but you'd have a v8 which is very cool indeed. ;-)

Kitten is this make... (moggy = cheap...) . He is so sweet. Great to have a housetruck cat! I must update the truck thread.... The Lexus V8 is just so huge compared to the little V6. Plus it's still a fair bit heavier. Requires bulkhead cutting to fit in an hb. I did some measuring in my bay today. It looks good. I have 140mm in front of the crank pulley which is more than enough for a radiator and fans. The NS cam bank will either just nudge the brake servo or it'll clear. I can 'manipulate' the servo brackets and shift it sideways another 30mm anyhow. The top of the v6 manifold should be no higher than the current alternator position so I have plenty of room there. The cam housings/ heads sit away from the bulk head by 100mm so enough room to use stock dizzy out back. Plus heads clear the clutch master. The stock V6 is a front sump as is the rotary. How handy. The V6 sump is deeper above the crossmember but I would reshape it and have a bigger winged pan for extra oil. I measured a friends rotary flywheel up. The rotary flywheel sits just 5 mm further away from the block- easy to sort when I make a flywheel spacer to suit whichever thickness engine to bell housing adaptor ring I make. Only problem is the rotary flywheel is 20mm larger in dia than the 1.8 V6 item. I know that others have used rx7 bell housings on V6 conversions so perhaps the larger 2.0 or 2.5 engines have a bigger flywheel diameter? So it's looking good. I almost bought a complete mazda mx6 today- cheap but no mot or tax. I decided not to risk it and instead continue looking for a cheap engine by itself. Half an hour later, after I had gotten off the phone to tell the fella in chch I wasn't going to buy his mx6, I found this bargain on trademe ending 2 hours later.... www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=521174964Which I have just bought. Its a K8 1.8 but I think being a J import it'll be the 144bhp ZE model plus it has all the parts I need to start with. At 100 quid its worth the punt. I'll just tow it to my parents and start striping it down next weekend. Very chuffed. Looking at a cheap KF 2.0L elsewhere too- again a JDM model with 160bhp. Hopefully I'll score that too.

G'day Why not just replace the 12A with an 6 port injected 13B? I can get 30mpg out of MORRX, not being too carefull. You get 120kw(160hp) in standard tune, more if you want it and it should be a fairly easy swop. Cheers Graham

Hiya, I'm almost getting that now- well I have seen 29mpg on one trip. pretty good for a non injected turbo 12A. I knew that the 13B 6 ports can be fairly thrifty if driven carefully. But you know rotaries.. as soon as you start having some fun they then really start to drink....
I'm also sort of itching at my spanner fingers and just like the idea of a swap.

Hey Alex. Have a friend down here with a supercharged Holden V6 in a 2-door Viva II. That goes rather well... Local content and all that stuff. Am in the throes of preparing several Marinas for disposal. The salt air is threatening to eat them. Don't want a Mazda Luce semi-tank do you.? Lots of room for freeloading pax... Stay cool, Kilroy

Yep- that will work fine except the rev counter is for a 6 cylinder. I don't know how easy It is to change about. If it's got AC branded clocks in it, I had great success simply tweaking the trim-pot on the back of the 6-cyl one I had for a 3.3 straight-six being driven off the coil of a Rover V8. Ultimately the curve is the same, the relationship of pulses/time is all that needs adjusting Six to four should offer enough adjustment, but I found that I had to start changing resistors after a bit of paper-napkin-and-calculator math to get one for a four-pot down to two (wasted-spark ignition on a four-cylinder, triggered in the traditional way rather than by the ECU) In essence, they usually have enough adjustment in them to be able to tweak it with a cheapy tacho from a motor factors hooked up as a calibration guide. --Phil
