ok guys i NO you'll know this, tried google but got lots of conflicting answers my lad wants to razz around on his 50cc quad in the snow in the morning but as he hasnt used it for ages I cant remember the mix i'll be sticking in a 5ltr can of petrol but how much 2stroke oil do i add to that quantity of petrol ?? thick I know but for the life of me I cant remember the mix thanks ;D

Better to have too much oil than not enough. Range will probably be between 25:1 to 50:1. I'd say mix 25:1 and accept a bit of smoke than risk seizure.

^Indeed. We can't tell the mix from the capacity - it's different for each manufacturer.
I'm guessing that it's a Chinese special with no after-sales backup? If it's a recognised brand, get in touch with their customer services department and ask them what the mix is - they'll probably want to know the model number.

25:1 is the normal for most premix 2stroke engines

As above, about 25:1 is fine. Mix it rich and the worst you'll do is clag the exhaust up a bit and cause a bit more smoke.

following on from the "what mix to use" thread (btw thanks for the advice, worked a treat and despite not running for a year once started it ran silky smooth, quad+ sledge+rope = much fun in the snow ;D only downside was the blinking chain kept coming off. as we all love a pic ive included a few. ive checked both sides of the chain and I cant see a split?? do they do split chains anymore ?? I cant see any logical way of extending the axle or sprocket on the engine side to tighten the chain ?? so i'm thinking do I snap the chain off completely and replace with a split one with say half or a full link taken out?? thanks all

You might be able to move the engine forwards? The 50cc bikes I've dealt with had this.
If the chain is genuinely stretched though, change it because you'll bugger up the sprockets. On pushbikes even 1% stretch is enough to cause serious wear.
The chain should be 6mm pitch - Get a ruler and measure as many links as you can in one go and work out if it's just too baggy. New chains are only about £8

totally different to my raptor 700, on that there are 4 bolts on the swing arm to loosen then an adjuster bolt, but for what its worth i had to cut the chain off as no link, to replace with new, however a 50cc quad i would just remove 2 links to tighten it, bicycle chain link remover should cope with that?

its difficult to see but the engine is bolted to four welded to the frame really basic rectangular mounts so I don't think it could move forwards. like you say, safe bet is a new chain I think. not sure what you mean about measuring the links in one go though ??

Chain tensioner?
Use one like a KORE mountain bike one. The just use a very heavy duty roller rather than a toothed cog. Also can be set stiffer.

rather stupidly Ive just realised why havent I shown a pic with the chain actually on !!! doh. anyways, hope this explains the limp chain better lol

To see the stretch, measure about 20 or so pins at once. Ideally, 30 pins should be 30 x 6mm, or 180mm center to center. If its 182mm or more, then the chain is toast. Unless it was too long to start with, running out of adjustment does point to the chain being pretty much definitely buggered.
You can push these rivets in and out with a pushbike chain tool, but it takes some doing. Make sure you don't let the rivet fall completely out of the link or you'll never get it back in.
Removing a link on a worn chain should only really be done as a bodge to get you home, but on the other hand if the chain is fine and was just too long to start with then it's fine.

cheers mark, worked a treat today. quad's been stood neglected for ages, but with the snow & kids on "snowdays" from school much fun was needed. tied a sledge (or sled ??) to the back with rope and pulled my lads around for a bit they loved it haha.

thanks cobblers, the measuring makes sense now, i'll go do it and report back. all in all I'm more than happy to spend a tenner on a chain if it keeps things from really messing up. thanks again for the help guys

ok, confused now, measured the links and based on in the white box being two the distance counting 30 = 23.5cm or I guess measuring the top part of the chain and the box only being one link then obviously it still measures 23.5cm thanks

from the looks of the first 2 pics you loosen the 4 big bolts that hold the axle to the swing arm and tighten the two adjusters at the bottom then once chain tight retighten the axle bolts also make sure the chain is well oiled (hypoid gear oil is my favorite) and yes a worn chain will destroy sprockets another way of checking wear is to pull the chain away from the back of the sprocket and if it will pull furthe back than the length of the teeth its fubarred ttfn glenn
