been offered this: www.pistonheads.com/sales/2275526.htmas a straight swap for mine: www.pistonheads.com/sales/2298813.htmIgnoring the win factor of driving a retro-ish motor versus a french POS, Is this beemer worth the money it's up for or do you think it's just a 4/500 quid smoker with some gash wheels? (I'd like to point out that if I got the e30, I wouldnt keep the wheels!!) opinions greatly appreciated....

There is the very nice gold one on here for £400 so not sure if it's worth that. Maybe though as it's black and a manual. Have you asked any small dealers what they would offer cash money for the Lag?

i would find an e30 in better condition with some tastier morsels on it to swap for the laguna or would be interested in a cash sale fella i would avoid that one on pistonheads it has changed hands very recently and is being shipped on i guess buecause of some serious issue thats not been mentioned .

Check the body work throughly. Most E30's are rusting away like most cars of that era. If the rust is in the odd panel then the car could be worth it. Second hand parts supply is plentiful and BMW still stock almost everything new.
Check sills, rear dif mounts, suspension mounts, struts for rust. Also check when the timing belt and belt tensioner were replaced. They must be done every 30,000 miles on an M20 engine. I had the timing belt, tensioner, water pump and a new fan replaced on my 520i (same engine) and it cost new £184 at a specialist. So it's not a biggie if it needs doing but it must be done.
A 320i is a fine car and original E30 wheels are very easy to find.

providing the E30 is in decent order, thats a good deal. If something major is wrong, it will be much cheaper to fix than the laguna anyway, and the price of E30s has not been appreciating for five years or more now where the laguna is still sliding down and will only become worth less...

if its solid and straight its well worth it. Black, manual ones hold a premium, shame its not a 325 as it would be worth alot more, easy to change tho.

Check the scuttle near the lower corners of the windscreen, they rot there and to do a proper repair aint easy.
Also check the head gasket. I looked at a lot of E30s and E34s that had blown gaskets.

I would! You wouldn't have a problem selling that again. I'd change the wheels though.

hmmm mixed feedback.... Thanks for all the tips about what to look for - will be inspecting all of the rust areas - how do i know if it's had a cambelt change if theres no service history? I don't fancy a bill for that!! what other symptoms should I be looking for? are the diffs prone to failure :/

If that's as straight as it looks and drives nice I reckon that's a potential daily It's got seat covers on it, so the squabs have probably gone stringy but I can't see a pair of s/h seats being that much money. Those wheels are probably multifit so after fitting some more suitable wheels you should be able to hawk them out down your local drive thru. If he hasn't got any receipts for a cam belt then get a belt, the Haynes book of lies and chuck one on it yourself It's got 10 months MOT on it [famous last words] so it can't be that rusty [/famous last words] It'll need taxing in 2 months time so that's a £100 and something quid you need to put aside out of your first months wages but hell, I hate those Lagunas with a passion so my opinion is probably somewhat biased. Like surprisingskoda says it'll be far cheaper and easier to fix if it does go wrong, I mean seriously, £30 to turn the puncture warning light off?! What a swizz!

yea i figured from the seat covers that the seats would be a little knackered, but I can sit on them til dec as they are and replace them when I get paid Wheels can go on flreabay or local cruise sites - they're corsa pcd so cant see getting rid of them being too hard! lol The belt is the issue I have, I don't currently have the space or the money to do it - I need to get a car that will require curse word all other than petrol for the first 2 months of ownership Tax is no biggie - I can budget for that when it works the renault is actually quite a nice motorway drive, it doesnt really do sporty though lol its only 30 quid to get the puncture light turned off if you don't get your new tyre fitted at renault - only problem being that they wanted 160 notes per corner, so i told them where to stick it!!

From where I'm standing, the BMW may or may not have a major problem, but it is interesting.
The Laguna might currently be fine, but it is a laguna, so it's pretty much going to break down in a major way very soon, and even after you spend hundreds to fix it, it'll still be a laguna.

Probably flog it to someone to take drifting - Looking to get me a decent mx5 or del sol in March/April for use as a daily I guess I could take it drifting, but I reckon someone else on here would make better use of it than me...

I am not mega keen on Lagunas, but do not mind them. In your shoes, I would stick with the Laguna over the E30. As for the Lag bashers, there is one at work with nearly 400k on it, still going ok when you consider it is driven by people who don't care for it... They are nice on the motorways too.
E30 looks nice but as above MOT can mean it was done as a favour... Plus you know where you stand with the French. BMWs of any age are not cheap to maintain, and with those wheels you do wonder where the maintenance has been skimped upon ...

erm e30 parts are as cheap as mk2 golf parts, and just as easy to work on.

For every Laguna you can find with starship mileage (and adding your example makes two that I've heard of), I can find half a dozen that went back to the dealer under warranty for various problems that rendered them completely inoperative. I know a taxi driver that got a good offer on his Toyota, started using a Renault about 3 years old and spent so much time in the garage as soon as it was started in service that he folded the taxiing in 6 months. And the E30 is probably the cheapest and simplest BMW ever to work on - it's no more complicated and in some ways easier to work on than my Skoda Estelles, which are by no means a complicated car!
