Hiya guys, to cut a long story short, on friday my friend was driving home in my old Renault megane 1.6e. He pulled away from a roundabout and lost all drive, we towed it home and replaced the clutch which was a curse word of a job. After we had done this the problem hadnt changed so we spent Sunday and monday swapping the gearbox with one we got from the scrapyard and guess what, the problems still there.
Any ideas or advice would be greatly apriciated.
Cheers, Guys.

Is the clutch Hydraulic or cable operated? Any odd noises? does it go into gear with the engine running without touching the clutch pedal?

Its a cable clutch, Yes it is making a whiring noise, when the car first when you could put it in every gear without the cluch but since the other box was put in it is harder to put it in gear without the clutch. Cheers, Andy.

I seem to recall on that Sattelite TV programme The Garage, Ricky had a Meganne in with the same fault. It was the drive shaft had lost all its splines, or not enough to transfer the drive. He did explain that this was often overlooked and a common fault, as when you first look at the shaft there appears to be nothing wrong. On closer inpsection with a new one, you could see how much the splines had worn away.

I was going to say it sounds like a driveshaft issue. My ex-GF had a Megane Mk1 Coupe that had that problem, it was the drivers side one and it went when it was cold in January.

This whirring sound, does it get faster the higher gear the car is in, or is it just with engine revs? There is a possibility the release bearing is stuck, or the clutch plate is in the wrong way (or even incorrect) in this case, the whirring would be related to engine speed and not gear.
If the whirring gets faster in higher gears, then its on the output side so could very well be the shaft.
A mates driveshaft snapped inside the CV, and it looked fine outside. I've also seen, like above where the splines have worn away from a shaft (perhaps not hardened properly in manufacture)

If a single driveshaft comes out, you lose all drive. This has happened twice to me, I made sure the shaft was in properly.

i would say driveshaft too. I was driving my wifes seat ibiza the other day, and the passenger side driveshaft just fell off (the bolts which held it in the gearbox had somehow loosened off and 1 by 1 fell out). loss of drive was instant, as you would expect!

I was thinking d/s to, suppose easiest way to check is leave car in gear, jack one side at a time and see if you can turn the wheel?

Better late than never... sorry to miss the bus by the afternoon, apparently these gearboxes are bad for it, the groove gets bad. You can tell when it's done it because if you stick it in gear the speedo goes up but you go nowhere...
Didn't really help but meh

probably need replaced? I don't know what kind of clips they are or how they're held in, but it sounds lie either the clips are knackered and need replaced, theres something that secures the clips that is missing or whatever they clip on to is worn/broken....

I had this problem on my Octavia. turned out to be knackered struts. They were producing too much negative camber (excess tuck?) which was causing the inner joint to fail.

Get a pic of the ends of the driveshafts, there's a simple circlip around them in a groove.
